To the Speaker of the House of Representatives: } SIR-In answer to the resolution of the house of representatives, of the 10th inst., the accompanying statement has been prepared and is herewith submitted. Number of persons employed in the engineer department of the Clinton and Kalamazoo canal, viz: Total amount paid for engineering on Clinton and Kalamazoo canal, from May 1, 1840, to January 31, 1841, including salaries of engineers, levellers, rodmen and axmen, office rent, stationery, etc., etc., 1,080 00 1,080 00 $3,588 63 [No. 50.] Report of the select committee appointed to investigate the condition of the Bank of Michigan and the Farmers' and Mechanics' bank of Michigan. The select committee created by a resolution of the house, on the 15th inst., to investigate the condition and affairs of the Bank of Michigan, and also of the Farmers' and Mechanics' bank of Michigan, respectfully report: That immediately subsequent to their appointment, they met and organized, and proceeded to the Bank of Michigan, where they were received with all due courtesy, and such facilities offered for a full and fair investigation as the committee might, with propriety, desire. As a basis for the investigation, your committee requested the Bank of Michigan and also the Farmers' and Mechanics' bank of Michigan, to prepare and submit to them an exhibit of their liabilities and resources up to the 15th instant, which the banks accordingly rendered at a subsequent time, herewith submitted. Preliminary to the investigation, your committee then passed a resolution, which was transmitted to each of the banks, concerning which, the following replies were received: BANK OF MICHIGAN, Hon. Myron Strong, Chairman, &c.: SIR-I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, at your hands, of a copy of the following resolution, adopted by the committee appointed by the house of representatives, to examine the condition of the Bank of Michigan and the Farmers' and Mechanics' bank, of this city: "Resolved, That the chairman be requested to inform the president of the Bank of Michigan, that the committee desire to be furnished with a statement of the assets of the bank, in which statement shall be set forth, "First. The personal securities held by the bank, the name of each of the drawers and endorsers, date, amount, and when due. "Second. The real estate securities, by whom given, date, amount, and when due, and a general description of property on which such securities rest, item by item. "Third. Description of stocks owned by the bank. "Fourth. Drafts and bills of exchange, item by item, draw. ers, indorsers and drawees, amounts, when and where payable. "Fifth. Notes and dues from other banks, with the amounts |
