THE Schools Inquiry Commissioners considered it desirable that, besides the full account of the Endowed Schools given in vols. x-xx. of their Reports, the following concise account, in a tabular form, of the financial condition of each school, with other statistical facts, should be published in one volume. To this has been added a full digest of the information supplied by the authorities of the several Colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, in reference to such exhibitions and scholarships tenable at, and under the control of, any College at Oxford or Cambridge as are restricted to candidates from particular schools or districts. (See Report, vol. i. p. 11.) A short account has also been given of Hulme's and Betton's Charities, two important endowments more or less applicable to educational purposes. The first set of tables (pp. 7-338) relates to schools which were either intended by the founder or are at the present time reputed to be Grammar Schools, and includes (a) Endowed schools, described as teaching grammar by the Commissioners for Inquiring into Charities (1818-1837); (b) Endowed schools originally intended for primary education, but which are now teaching grammar, e.g. Cannock, Staffordshire; Fowey and St. Stephen's by Launceston, Cornwall; Lymm, Cheshire, &c.; (c) Endowed schools recently founded, e.g. Framlingham College, Suffolk; Handsworth, Staffordshire; Surrey county school, Cranleigh, &e. The information has been derived entirely from the original answers sent to the questions of the Commissioners by the trustees and master of each school, from the Reports of the Assistant Commissioners, and from Accounts obtained from the office of the Charity Commission. Where the statements made in these tables differ from those found in the Digests given n vols. x.-xx., the discrepancy is usually due to the fact that e figures have been taken from the Accounts of a different and er year. |
