Eve were created on the sixth day, as is declared, did they pass the seventh day of 1,000 years in Paradise? They certainly did not, because their son Seth was born when Adam's age was 130 years, and between that event and his creation on the sixth day must have intervened the Fall, the expulsion from the Garden, birth of Cain and Abel, and the murder of one by the other, Seth being born, as Eve says, " as an appointed seed," instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. Jehovah quotes also His own example to His people Israel in the Fourth Commandment, and hallows the seventh day (certainly a literal day) for them likewise.

FINANCIAL NECESSITIES.

We have absolutely nothing in the DORMITORY FUND, and hope that the example of a most kind friend who has given us 1007. for the rebuilding of one of our old houses, and the enlargement of our general Mission-room, may be speedily followed, as this is at present the most pressing need of the Mission. We ask nothing in the way of ornament or decoration, but for the monthly meeting of 300 workers we must have more height of roof, and secure more space and air. It is a point of no small importance at this time that the BIBLE NURSES should be visibly kept in relation to and communication with the BIBLE-WOMEN.

OCTOBER FINANCIAL REPORT.

WE have to remind the many friends interested in our welfare, that on October the 15th we make up our accounts for the year, and that the comparative statement for the past eleven months, at present shows a decrease in the receipts for the BIBLE MISSION of 4197., which is partly met by a decrease in expenditure of 1537. The October month of last year included a legacy of 5007., and brought in a total of 1,9291. We have 125 BIBLE-WOMEN chiefly dependent on the General Fund, and should rejoice to hear of the adoption of any of them by special supporters as is the case with our other sixty-six, and with thirty-two of our Bible-women NURSES. For twenty-five of the latter we have no special support. The cost of either agency, on an average, is 50l. a year. More help for the rebuilding of one of our Dormitories and the enlargement of our Central Mission Room is also urgently required. The sum hitherto subscribed is already paid to the builders, and we shall need 3001. more by the end of the first or second week in October.

FRUITS OF OUR NURSING-WORK.

(BY A LADY SUPERINTENDENT.) "MY DEAR MRS. R――,

"You have done good service in bringing before the public, in a concentrated form, the necessity of NURSES FOR THE NEEDY.' Only those who are engaged in the work can truly value the distribution of such 'Bible-women Nurses' over the numerous districts of this vast city as channels of usefulness and blessings; another instance of which is contained in the history of a family who came under my care, which seems to set forth strikingly the sovereignty of God in appointing the circumstances through which He gathers His children into His fold. How often they are led by a way they know not!

"H. W was employed on the Great Western Railway, and was much respected by his employers and fellow-workmen. He was an intelligent, steady, industrious man, but without any concern about the realities of an eternal state. He attended a place of worship on Sundays, because he had been brought up to do so, and he thought it right, but did not feel that more was required.

Among his children was a little boy of considerable personal VOL. XI.-NO. 10.

beauty and engaging manners. His affection for this child amounted to idolatry; he never felt happy when he was out of his sight.' 'Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Jehovah.' So it was, the Holy Ghost was preparing

the heart of H. W for His own dwelling-place, and could not share it with an idol, therefore the dear child was suddenly removed by the hand of death. This was a crushing stroke. All his happiness seemed to be buried in the grave of his child.

"He could not bear to return home from his work to his meals. His little one no longer ran to meet him with delight, or smiled in his face when receiving the accustomed caresses on daddy's knee. Instead of taking his food, he spent the allotted time in tears and groans. His health began to fail, and his wife frequently told him if he murmured against God Almighty in that way a heavier stroke might come to him.

This aroused his anxiety.

"Time subdued his feelings, but rebellion was still in his heart. He became too weak to do his work, and was laid aside by illness, so serious that the medical man said he did not think he could recover. Not recover?' he said to himself; then I am not fit to die. I shall go to hell.' His fear became agony itself. He tried to pray, but could not command words to express his anguish and cry to God for

mercy.

"All that day and night he felt as one stunned; his mouth was shut, and his heart, he said, was hell itself.' All his sins rose up before him, and he felt himself a lost man; it was only a question of time ere he should be in perdition.

"Early in the morning, while his wife was still asleep, he managed to raise himself up in bed, at the side of which, and within his reach, stood a small table with the Bible upon it. Well,' he thought, that is strange, who has put that there? No one had the Bible last night.' He laid hold of it, and opening it, his eyes fell upon the 60th chapter and first verse of the Prophet Isaiah:

"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.'
