GENERAL STATISTICS FOR OPERATING MANUFACTURING ESTABLISHMENTS CLASSIFIED BY TYPE OF OPERATION AND LEGAL ORGANIZATION, Each establishment of multiestablishment 1All data are based on reports for individual manufacturing establishments, and not on a company basis. companies is classified by its primary industrial activity. For this reason the statistics presented in this table cannot be compared directly with tabulations in which the whole corporation or company is the reporting unit and the entire company is classified in one industry, for example, the statistics of income of corporations compiled by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, U. S. Treasury Department. Establishments were classified as part of a multiunit company when the company operated two or more manufacturing establishments or one manufacturing plant plus any other type of establishment. Includes cooperatives, establishments operated by estate administrators, trusteeships, receiverships, and public and quasi-public organizations. Includes Major Industry Group 19, "Ordnance and Accessories." Group 19 includes a number of government owned privately operated establishments. Establishments which are government-owned and government-operated are not included. See 1947 Census of Manufactures, Volume I, Chapter V for a measure of undercoverage by industry. 2 The figures for 1949 through 1952 represent estimates derived from a representative sample of manufacturing establishments canvassed in the Annual Survey of Manufactures. These estimates consequently may differ from the results that would have been obtained from a complete canvass of all manufacturing establishments. The standard errors associated with these estimates are published in the Annual Survey of Manufactures volumes for these years. 3Separate figures for work-in-process inventories were not requested for Industry 2011, Meat Packing, and Industry 2013, Prepared Meats, but were combined with the inventories of finished products. "The total inventories reported in the 1954 Census for Industry 2141 were allocated by type of inventory of the basis of the distribution reported in the 1953 Annual Survey of Manufactures. 5 Inventory data were not collected from establishments classified in the printing and publishing industries. Includes privately owned and/or operated establishments classified in Major Industry Group 19, "Ordnance and Accessories." (Establishments which are government owned and operated are not included.) |
