THE AUTHOR.

JACQUES BENIGNE BOSSUET was born September 27, 1627, of respectable parents at Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, and now of the department of the Cote d'Or. He received his first instructions at the College of Jesuits in that city, where he gave early proofs of superior talents. Being intended for the Church, he was sent to Paris in 1642, to finish his studies at the College of Navarre. After completing his theological course, he received the degree of Doctor of the Sorbonne in 1652, and immediately removed to Metz, where he was first appointed Canon of the Church, afterward Arch-deacon, and at length Dean. Here he acquitted himself with great credit, and appears to have devoted himself to his clerical duties without any endeavours to obtain preferment. He laboured
