PREFACE.

THIS volume, the forty-second of the series of "Collections" of the Society, for the year 1909, consists of two parts: first, "Ledger No. 1, Chamberlain's Office Corporation of the City of New York, May 11, 1691, to November 12, 1699," and shows a great contrast of payments made by the City at that period and the present. Unfortunately the Journal of Payments for the same years is not on file. The Society is indebted to the Hon. William A. Prendergast, Comptroller of the City of New York, for the privilege of having this interesting City document copied. The second part consists of "Indentures of Apprentices, October 21, 1718, to August 7, 1727"; the original volume was on file in the Register's Office of this City for many years and was known as "Liber 29 of Conveyances"; the volume contains Indentures of Apprenticeship only, and came into the possession of the Society in 1905, and is an interesting addition to the Indentures of Apprenticeship 16941708, published in the "Collections" for 1885.
