1756. Studied law at the Middle Temple, London. Admitted to the Bar of Philadelphia, in 1808. Colonel of the 42d Pennsylvania Reserves in the War of 1812. Commanded this regiment in the movement on Canada, and was in the Battle of Lundy's Lane. Removed to Huntingdon County, in 1809. Served many terms in the legislature. Afterwards settled in Mineral Point, Wis., where he passed the remainder of his life. Adjutant-General of Wisconsin, in 1839-52; District-Attorney, Iowa County, many years; member of the Constitutional Convention. Chief Clerk of the State Senate, 1849-50, and AttorneyGeneral, 1856-8. President Wisconsin Historical Society. He was a bright and active Freemason, Past-Master of Mineral Point Lodge, and Past-Grand-Master of the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. He was a voluminous writer, and many of his works have been published. He had a cultivated poetical taste, and much of his writing, in verse, is preserved and prized by his descendants.

Said Bankson was descended from Swedish ancestors, who came to this country in ship Mercurius, 1656, and settled in the now county of Philadelphia. The Clement family came over from England, in Charles the 2nd time. The Taylors were also English. Samuel Clement's grandmother, on his father's side was Elizabeth Tylee. She was born in New Jersey The Clements have dwelt there for several generations, but first settled in New England." Copied from a Bible now in the possession of Mrs. Henrietta Boude Wilson, of Tyrone, Penna.

82. THOMAS DILLARD, Surgeon United States Navy. He was the son of Thomas and Lucy (Taliaferro) Dillard; was b. Jan., 1801, in Virginia. Grad. at the University of Pennsylvania. Appointed Assistant Surgeon, 15 Nov., 1824. Commissioned Surgeon 3 Jan., 1828. Was forty-five years in the service of his country; fourteen years spent in service in different quarters of the globe, and the rest on shore in important positions, and also as a member of boards of examination. The last service rendered at sea expired at the close of the year 1861, when he proved his devotion to the flag of his country in its hour of danger. Was a very active member of the Society of the Cincinnati; d. 1 March, 1870, at Philadelphia; bu. there.
