THE law relating to Libel and Slander has undergone considerable modification since the First Edition of this Book was published in February, 1881. In August, 1881, the Newspaper Libel and Registration Act became law; two years later the general practice of the High Court was altered in many respects by the Rules of the Supreme Court, 1883; while in the Chancery Division a practice has sprung up of granting injunctions in cases of libel and slander, which is not in accordance with the former procedure. Two new Chapters have, therefore, been added in this Edition-one on the Act of 1881, the other on Injunctions; while the Chapters on Costs and Practice in Civil Cases have been much modified. The Chapter on Blasphemous Words has been entirely re-written, and by the kind permission of Lord Coleridge, C.J., I am enabled to add in an Appendix |
