921 PRIVATE INTERPRETATION OF PARABLES.

gathering the tares ye root up the wheat with them: 30 Suffer both to grow together until the harvest and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them : but gather the wheat into my barn.

THE GRAIN OF MUSTARD AND THE LEAVEN. Matt. xiii., 31-35. Mark iv., 30-34.

31 ANOTHER parable he set before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard, which a man having taken, sowed in his field: 32 Which indeed is the least of all the seeds: but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and roost in its branches, 33 Another parable he spoke to them, The kingdom of heaven is like to leaven, which a woman having taken, hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables, and without a parable he spoke nothing to them. 35So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.

PRIVATE INTERPRETATION OF PARABLES.

Matt. xiii., 36-52.

36THEN having sent away the multitudes, he went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 And he answering said: He who soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38And the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; but the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 And the enemy who sowed them is the devil; and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 As then the tares are gathered and burned with fire, so shall it be in the end of the age. 41The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all the stumbling blocks, and those who do iniquity; 42And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 43Then the righteous shall

shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who hath ears let him hear. 44The kingdom of heaven is like to treasure hidden in the field, which a man having found, hid, and through his joy goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking goodly pearls: 46 And having found one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. 47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea, and gathering of every kind: 48Which, when it was full, they drew upon the shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. 49So shall it be at the end of the age: the angels shall come forth and separate the evil from the midst of the righteous, 50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the wailing and the gnashing of teeth. 51Understand ye all these things? They say to him, Yes. 52And he said to them, On this account, every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like to a man, a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

THE MOTHER AND THE BRETHREN OF CHRIST. 2ND VISIT. Luke viii., 19-21. Capharnaum.

19 AND there came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not get to him because of the multitude. 20 And it was told him, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 21 But he answering said to them, My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God, and obey it.

EXCUSES OF THE DISCIPLES.

19 AND a certain scribe having come, said to him, Teacher, I will follow thee wherever thou goest. 20 And Jesus saith to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have roosts; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 21 And another of the disciples said to him, Lord, Suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But he saith to him, Follow me; and leave the dead to bury

their dead. 23 And he having entered into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And, behold, there was a great storm in the lake, so that the boat was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25 And having come they awoke him, saying, Lord, save! we are perishing. 26 And he saith to them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising, he rebuked the winds and the waves; and there was a great calm.

THE REQUEST OF THE DEMONS.

Matt. viii., 31-32.

31 AND the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us into the herd of swine. 32And he said to them, Go.

According to Mark v., 8-9, 12-13.

For he (Jesus) was saying to him, Unclean spirit, come out of the man, and he asked him, what is thy name? And he saith to him, my name is Legion, for we are many. And they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine. And he gave them leave.

TO THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN A DEMONIAC.

Mark v., 18-19.

AND on his entering into the boat, he who had been the demoniac besought him that he might be with him. And he suffered him not but saith to him, Go to thy house to thy friends, and tell them what things the Lord hath done for thee and hath pitied thee.

JESUS EATING WITH TAX-GATHERERS AND SINNERS. Matt. ix., 10-17.

10 AND it came to pass while he was reclining in the house, behold, many tax gatherers and sinners came and reclined with Jesus and his disciples. 11And the Pharisees seeing it, said to his disciples, Why eateth your Teacher with the tax gatherers and sinners? 12And he having heard it, said, The healthy need not a physician, but those who are ill. 13But go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I came not to call righteous men, but sinners. 14Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? 15 And Jesus said to them, Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn,

as long as the bridegroom is with them? but days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they shall fast. 16No one putteth a patch of new cloth to an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17Neither do they pour new wine into old skins; else the skins burst and the wine runneth out, and the skins are destroyed: but they put new wine into new skins, and both are preserved.

JAIRUS APPLIES TO JESUS TO VISIT HIS DAUGHTER. Luke viii., 41-56.

41 AND behold there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue and falling at the feet of Jesus, he besought him to enter into his house: 42 For he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as he went, the people thronged him. 43 And a woman having a hemorrhage from twelve years old, who had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by any, 44Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment and immediately the hemorrhage ceased. 45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? And all having denied, Peter and they who were with him said, Master, the multitude throng and press thee. 46 But Jesus said, Some one hath touched me: for I perceive that power has gone out from me. 47 And the woman seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and falling down before him, declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48And he said, Daughter, thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. 49 While he yet spake, there cometh one towards the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead, trouble not the Teacher any more. 50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, Fear not only believe and she shall be saved. 51And coming into the house, he suffered no one to enter with him except Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the child. 52And all wept, and bewailed her. But he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But, he having taken her hand, cried saying, Child,

CONCERNING JOHN THE BAPTIST.

THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CONCERNING JOHN. Matt. xi., 7-26.

At Nain.

7AND these having departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? behold, they who wear soft garments are in the houses of kings. 9But why went ye out? To see a prophet? yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ioThis is he, of whom it hath been written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. 11Verily, I say to you, Among those born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist: but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent seize it. 13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, He is Elijah, who was to come. 15 He who hath ears let him hear. 16 But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who, calling to their companions, 17Say, We piped to you, and ye did not dance we mourned, and ye did not lament. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon. 19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and of sinners. But wisdom is justified by her works. 20Then he began to upbraid the cities in which most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: 21 Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capharnaum, hast thou not been exalted to heaven? thou shalt be brought down to hades: for if the mighty works, done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24Moreover I say to you, It shall be re tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judg
