THE TOWER OF SILOAM.

he is not aware, and will cut him asunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant, who knew his will, and prepared not, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes: 48 But he who knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And from every one to whom much was given, much shall be required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. 491 came to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I oppressed until it be accomplished! 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on the earth? I tell you, no; but rather division. 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53A father shall be divided against a son, and a son against a father; a mother against a daughter, and a daughter against a mother; a motherin-law against a daughter-in-law, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 54 And he said also to the multitudes, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, immediately ye say, A shower cometh; and so it is: 55 And when ye see the south wind blowing ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. 56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the earth and of the sky; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? 57 And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 58 For when thou goest with thine adversary to a magistrate, give diligence whilst on the way to be delivered from him; lest he drag thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59I tell thee thou shalt not come out thence, until thou hast paid even the last lepton.*

THE GALILEANS-THE TOWER OF SILOAM-THE FIG TREE. Luke xiii., 1-9. Galilee.

Now, certain persons were present at that time, who told him concerning the Galilæans, whose blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices. 2And answering he said Lepton, the smallest coin in use amongst the Jews-about half an English farthing.

to them, Think ye that these Galilæans were sinners above all the Galilæans, because they have suffered such things? 31 tell you, No: but, except ye repent, ye shall all perish in like manner. 4Or those eighteen, upon whom fell, the tower in Siloam and killed them, think ye that they were sinners above all men who dwelt in Jerusalem ? 5I tell you, No: but, except ye repent, ye shall all perish in like manner. 6And he spoke this parable. A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none. 7Then said he to the vine-dresser, Behold, three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering saith to him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it and cast in manure: 9And if it bear fruit afterwards, well; and if not, thou shalt cut it down.

HEALING AN INFIRM WOMAN ON THE SABBATH.

Luke xiii., 10-17.

:

Valley of Jordan. Perea. 10 AND he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11And, behold, a woman having had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent together, and was unable to lift herself up at all. 12But Jesus seeing her, called and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, and said to the multitude, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them, therefore, come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 15 But the Lord answered him, and said, Hypocrites, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and leading him away give him drink? 16And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day? 17 And he saying these things all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the multitude rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

18 HE said, therefore, To what is the kingdom of God like? and to what shall I resemble it? 19It is like a grain of mustard, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and became a tree, and the birds of the heaven lodged in its branches. 20 And again he said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

ARE THERE FEW BEING SAVED?

Luke xiii., 22-30.

Perea.

22 AND he went through the cities and villages, teaching and journeying towards Jerusalem. 23Then said one to him, Lord, are they few who are being saved? And he said to them, 24 Strive to enter through the narrow door: for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 25 From the time when the master of the house hath risen, and hath shut the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and answering he shall say to you, I know you not whence ye are : 26Then ye shall begin to say, We did eat and drink in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27 And he shall say, I tell you I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all workers of iniquity. 28 There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out. 29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall recline in the kingdom of God. 30 And, behold, they are last who shall be first, they are first who shall be last.

JESUS IN THE TERRITORY OF HEROD. Luke xiii., 31-35.

Perea.

31IN the same hour there came certain of the Pharisees, saying to him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod desireth to kill thee. 32And he said to them, Go ye,

and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons, and I do cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third day I make an end. 33 Nevertheless I must walk to-day, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. 34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who killest the prophets, and stonest those who are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a ben doth her brood under her wings, and ye would not! 35 Behold, your house is left to you. I say to you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord.

JESUS HEALING ON THE SABBATH DAY.

Luke xiv., 1-6.

Perea.

1AND it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they were watching him. 2And, behold, there was a certain man before him who was dropsical. 3 And Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbathday or not? 4And they were silent. And having taken him, he healed him, and let him go; 5And answering them, he said, Who of you shall have a son or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath-day? 6And they could not answer these questions.

JESUS ADDRESSES THE GUESTS OF THE PHARISEE. Luke xiv., 7-24.

AND he spoke a parable to those who were bidden, when he marked how they were choosing out the chief seats; saying to them, 8When thou art bidden by any man to a wedding, recline not on the chief seat, lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden by him; 9And he who bade thee and him, coming, shall say to thee, Give place to this man; and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when thou art bidden, go and recline in the lowest place, that when he who bade thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher; then shalt thou have honour in the presence of all those reclining with thee. 11For every one

who exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he who humbleth himself shall be exalted. 12Then said he also to him who bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompence thee: but thou shalt be recompenced in the resurrection of the just. 15And one of those who reclined with him having heard these things, said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. 16Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and must go out and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19And another said, I have bought five yokes of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20And another said I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come. 21 And the servant came and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the broad places and streets of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the blind, and the lame. 22And the servant said, Lord, it has been done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 21For I say to you, That none of those men who were bidden shall taste of my supper.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF TRUE DISCIPLES.

Luke xiv., 25-35.

Perea.

25 AND great multitudes were going with him: and he turned and said to them, 26If any one cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, and yet more, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever beareth not his cross, and cometh after me, cannot be
