THE END OF CHRIST'S PUBLIC MINISTRY. 81

he who seeth me seeth him who sent me. come a light into the world, that whoever believeth on me should not remain in darkness. 47 And if any one hear my words and keep them not, I judge him not: for I came not that I should judge the world, but that I should save the world. 48He who rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one who judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken from myself; but the Father who sent me, he hath given me a commandment what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatever I speak, according as the Father hath said to me, so I speak.

Matt. xxiii.

About to leave the Temple. THEN Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples 2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit upon the seat of Moses. 3Therefore all, whatever they shall say to you, do and observe; but do not ye after their works for they say, and do not. 4They bind heavy burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men; but they will not move them with their finger. 5But all their works they do to be seen by men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge their fringes, 6And they love the chief place at feasts, and the first seats in the synagogues, 7And the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 8But be ye not called Rabbi: for one is your teacher; and all ye are brethren. 9And call no one your father upon the earth: for one is your heavenly Father. 10Neither be ye called leaders: for one is your Leader-the Christ. 11But the greater of you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted. 13But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut the kingdom of heaven before men for ye neither go in, nor suffer ye those who are entering to enter. 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land

to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more a son of Gehenna than yourselves. 16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor ! 17 Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18And Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor. 19 Blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 He therefore who swears by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him who dwelleth therein. 22 And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe the mint, and the anise, and the cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, and mercy, and faith : these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24Blind guides, who strain off a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and injustice. 26 Blind Pharisee! cleanse first within the cup that its outside may be clean also. to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly indeed appear beautiful but are within full of the bones of the dead and of all uncleanness. 28Thus ye also outwardly indeed appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have partaken with them in the blood of the prophets. 31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are the sons of those who killed the prophets. 32 And ye fill up the measure of your fathers. 33Serpents! offspring of vipers! how can ye escape the judgment of Gehenna? 34On this account, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some

of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: 35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. 36Verily I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation. 370 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them who are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 3 For I say to you, Ye shall not see me from this time, till ye shall say, Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord.

THE PROPHECY RESPECTING THE BUILDINGS OF THE TEMPLE. Matt. xxiv.

AND Jesus went out from the temple and departed: and his disciples came to show him the buildings of the temple. 2And he answering said to them, See ye not all these? verily I say to you, There shall not be left here stone upon stone, which shall not be thrown down. 3 And as he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Tell us, when these things shall be ? and what the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the age? 4And Jesus answering said to them, Take heed lest any one should deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall deceive many. 6And ye shall be about to hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for it must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines and earthquakes, in divers places. 8But all these are the beginning of sorrows. 9Then shall they deliver you to affliction, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated by all nations through my name. 10 And then many will fall away, and will deliver up one another, and hate one another. 11And many false prophets shall be raised up, and shall deceive many. 12 And because iniquity shall abound the love of many

shall grow cold. 13But he who endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. 14And this, the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a testimony to all nations; and then shall the end come. 15 When therefore ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (he who reads, let him understand:) 16Then let those who are in Judæa flee to the mountains: 17Let him who is on the house not come down to take the things out of his house: 18 Neither let him who is in the field return back to take his garment. 19But woe to those who are pregnant, and to whose who nurse children in those days! 20 But pray that your flight be not in the winter, nor on the sabbath: 21For then there shall be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall be. 22And except those days were shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but on account of the chosen those days shall be shortened. 23Then if any one shall say to you, Lo! here is Christ, or there; believe not. 24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to deceive if possible even the chosen. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26If therefore they say to you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth to the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 28 Wherever the body may be, there will the eagles be gathered together. 29 And immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great trumpet, and they shall gather his chosen from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32Now learn the parable from the fig tree; When already its branch has become tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye

know that summer is nigh: 33Thus also when ye shall see all these things, know that he is near, even at the doors. 34Verily I say to you, This generation shall not pass away till all these things be done. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36But concerning that day and one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 And as the days of Noah so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in the days which were before

the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took all away; thus also shall be the coming of the Son of man. 40 Then there shall be two in the field; one shall be taken, and one left. 41Two grinding at the mill; one shall be taken and one left. 42 Watch therefore for ye know not what day your Lord cometh. 43 But know this, that if the householder had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken into. 44On this account be ye also ready for in an hour when ye think not the Son of man cometh. According to Mark xiii., 1-37.

1AND as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples saith to him, Teacher, see what great stones and what great buildings! 2And Jesus said to him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left stone upon stone that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat on the mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4Tell us when shall these things be? and what the sign when all these things shall be accomplished? 5And Jesus began to say to them, Take heed lest any one deceive you: 6Many shall come in my name, saying, I am he; and shall deceive many. 7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be not troubled it must needs be; but the end is not yet. 8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines.
