they light a lamp and place it under the measure, on the lamp-stand; and it giveth light to all who are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven. 17Think not that I came to relax the law, or the prophets; I came not to relax, but to complete. 18For verily I say to you, until the heaven and the earth pass away, one letter or one stroke shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be accomplished. 19Whoever therefore shall relax one of the least of these commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever shall do and teach them he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, Unless your righteousness shall greatly exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 21 Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; and whoever shall kill shall be liable to the judgment: 22 But I say to you, That whoever is angry with his brother shall be liable to the judgment: and whoever shall say to his brother, Racha, shall be liable to the sanhedrim but whoever shall say, Mōré, shall be liable to the gehenna of fire. 23 Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath anything against thee; 24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go away; first be reconciled to thy brother and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way: lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt not come out from thence till thou hast paid the last kodrantes.* 27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say to you, That whoever looketh on a woman with evil desire, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right eye cause thee to sin, pluck it out, and cast it from thee for it is profitable for thee that one of thy

members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into gehenna. 30 And if thy right hand cause thee to sin, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish and not thy whole body should go into gehenna. 31 And it was said, Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a deed of divorce: 32 But I say to you, Whoever putteth away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, maketh her to commit adultery and whoever shall marry the divorced committeth adultery. 33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say to you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is the throne of God: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your word be Yes, Yes: No, No: for whatever is more than these is from evil. 38 Ye have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 ButI say to you, resist not the evil doer: but whoever shall strike thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also: 40 And if any one will sue thee, and take thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 41 And whoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to him who asketh thee, and from him who would borrow of thee, turn not away. 43 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you: That ye may become sons of your Father in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and good, and sendeth rain on the just and unjust. 46 For if ye love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the taxgatherers the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

vi. 1But take heed not to work your righteousness before men, to be seen by them; if otherwise ye have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2Therefore when

thou givest alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Verily, I say to you, they receive their reward. 3 But when thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. 5 And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Verily I say to you, they receive their reward. 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret will reward thee. 7And when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, like the Gentiles for they think that they shall be heard by their much speaking. 8Be not therefore like them : for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9Therefore thus pray ye: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name: 10Thy kingdom come Thy will be done, as in heaven so on earth: 11Give us to-day our daily bread: 12And forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who sin against us. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14For if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a gloomy countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Verily I say to you, They receive their reward. 17 But thou, fasting, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18That thou mayest not appear to men to be fasting, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. 19Treasure not up for yourself treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But treasure up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupteth, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also. 22The lamp of the body is the eye. If thine eye be clear,

thy whole body will be light: 23 But if thine eye be diseased, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness! 24No one can serve two masters for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25On this account I say to you, Be not over anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor for your body, how ye may be clothed. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment ? 26 Look upon the birds of the heaven, for they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 And who of you, by being over anxious, can add one cubit to his stature? 28 And why are ye over anxious about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, nor spin: 29 And I say to you, That not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these. 30 And if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into an oven, will he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31Therefore, be not over anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed? 32 For all these things the Gentiles seek: For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek first his kingdom and righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore, be not over anxious for the morrow for the morrow shall be over anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

vii. 1Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye measure, it shall be measured to you. And why beholdest thou the splinter in thy brother's eye, but observest not the beam in thine own eye? 40r how wilt thou say to thy brother, let me pull out the splinter from thine eye; and, behold, the beam is in thine own eye? 5Hypocrite! first cast out the beam from thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the splinter from thy brother's eye. 6Give not the holy things to the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before the

swine, lest they trample them with their feet, and turning might rend you. 7Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: 8For every one who asketh receiveth; and he who seeketh findeth; and to him who knocketh it shall be opened. 90r what man is there of you, who if his son shall ask for bread, will he give him a stone? 10Or if he should ask also for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If then ye being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him? 12Therefore all things whatever ye would that men should do to you, do ye also so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. 13Enter through the narrow gate; for wide [is the gate] and broad is the way leading to destruction and many are entering through it; 14 Because narrow [is the gate] and strait the way leading into life and few there are who find it. 15 Beware of the false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but within are rapacious wolves. 16 Ye shall know them from their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17So every good tree beareth good fruit; but the bad tree beareth bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that beareth not good fruit is hewn down, and cast into a fire. 20Therefore from their fruits ye will know them. 21Not every one who saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who doeth the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out demons, and in thy name done many mighty works? 23 And then I will confess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye who work iniquity.

24Therefore every one who heareth these words of mine, and obeyeth them, shall be likened to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon the rock. 26And every one who heareth these words of mine, and obeyeth them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the
