NICODEMUS WITH JESUS.

NICODEMUS WITH JESUS.

Jerusalem.

John iii., 1-21. INow there was a man of the Pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2He came by night to him, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou hast come a teacher from God: for no one can do these signs which thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily, I say to thee, Unless any one be born from above, he cannot see the kindom of God. 4Nicodemus saith to him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say to thee, Unless any one be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said to thee, Ye must be born from above. 8The wind bloweth where it willeth and thou hearest the sound of it, but knowest not whence it cometh and where it goeth: so is every one who is born of the Spirit. 9Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said to him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say to thee, We speak what we know, and testify what we have seen; and ye receive not our testimony. 12If I have spoken to you earthly things, and ye believe not, how will ye believe if I speak to you heavenly things? 13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man, who is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That every one who believeth in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that everyone who believeth in him should not perish, but may have eternal life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He who believeth on him is not condemned: he who believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the 19 And this is the conname of the only Son of God. demnation, that the light came into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, because their

deeds were evil. 20For every one who doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who obeyeth the truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

JESUS AND THE WOMAN OF SAMARIA.

Sychar.

7THERE cometh a woman from Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, Give me to drink. 8For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food. 9The Samaritan woman saith to him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink from me, who am a Samaritan woman? 10Jesus answered and said to her, If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who he is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11The woman saith to him, Lord, thou hast not even a bucket, and the well is deep: whence hast thou the living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his cattle? 13Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone drinking of this water shall thirst again : 14But whoever shall drink of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him shall be in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life. 15The woman saith to him, Lord, give me this water that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. 16 He saith to her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus saith to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband: 18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly. 19The woman saith to him, Lord, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men must worship. 21Jesus saith to her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father. 22Ye worship ye know not what we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23But hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers

shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father also seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth. 25The woman saith to him, I know that Messiah cometh, who is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26Jesus saith to her, I am he, who am speaking to thee.

321 HAVE food to eat which ye know not of. 34Jesus saith to them, My food is that I may do the will of him who sent me, and may finish His work. 35Say ye not there are yet four months, and then harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and look on the fields for they are white for harvest. 36 Already he who reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit to life eternal that both he who soweth and he who reapeth may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true, that one is he who soweth, and another he who reapeth. 38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labor.

JESUS IN THE SYNAGOGUE AT NAZARETH.

Luke iv., 16-27.

16 AND he came to Nazara, where he had been brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Isaiah; and having unrolled the book, he found the place where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me 19to preach deliverance to the

captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are bruised, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And having rolled up the book, he gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say to them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bore witness to him, and wondered at the gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, Is not this the son of Joseph ? 23 And he said to them, Ye will surely say to me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatever we have heard has been done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy country. 24 And he said, Verily I say to you, No prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But to no one of them was Elijah sent, except into Sarepta, a city of Sidonia, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and no one of them was cleansed, except Naiman the Syrian.

Capharnaum.

FROM that time Jesus began to preach, and to say Repent: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

14Now after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God, 15Saying, The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye and believe the gospel.

TO SIMON AND Andrew, AND JAMES AND JOHN. Mark i., 16-20.

16 AND passing near the lake of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you to be fishers of men. 18 And immediately leaving the nets they followed him. 19 And having gone forward a little, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending the nets. 20And imme

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.

:

Matt. v., vi., vii. Near Capharnaum. 1AND seeing the multitudes, he went up on the mount: and having sat down, his disciples came to him: 2And having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 5Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted. 6Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God. 10Blessed are those who have been persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are ye, when they shall reproach and persecute you, and shall say every evil word against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you. 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt become tasteless, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden down by men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do
