JESUS ADDRESSES THE GUESTS.

who exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he who humbleth himself shall be exalted. 12Then said he also to him who bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompence thee: but thou shalt be recompenced in the resurrection of the just. 15And one of those who reclined with him having heard these things, said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. 16Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and must go out and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19And another said, I have bought five yokes of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come. 21 And the servant came and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the broad places and streets of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the blind, and the lame. 22And the servant said, Lord, it has been done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you, That none of those men who were bidden shall taste of my supper.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF TRUE DISCIPLES.

Luke xiv., 25-35.

25 AND great multitudes were going with him: and he turned and said to them, 26If any one cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, and yet more, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever beareth not his cross, and cometh after me, cannot be

my disciple. 28 For who of you, wishing to build a tower, sitteth not down first and counteth the cost, whether he hath the means to finish it? 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and not being able to finish it, all who see it begin to mock him, 30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? 32And if not, he being yet afar off, he sendeth an embassy and asketh the conditions for peace. 33So likewise every one of you who forsaketh not all that he hath, cannot be my disciple. 34 Now salt is good; but if even the salt become saltless, with what shall it be seasoned? 35It is fit neither for the land, nor for manure: they cast it out. He who hath ears, let him hear.

Luke xv., 1-10.

1Now all the tax gatherers and the sinners were drawing near to him to hear him. 2And both the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners and eateth with them. 3And he spoke this parable to them, saying, 4What man of you, having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, doth not leave the ninety-nine in the desert, and go after the lost one until he findeth it? 5And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And coming into the house he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7I say to you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety-nine just persons, who have no need of repentance. 8Or what woman having ten drachmo, if she lose one drachma, doth not light a lamp and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? 9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the drachma which I lost. 10Likewise,

THE PRODIGAL SON.

I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repenteth.

THE PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON.

Luke xv., 11-32.

11 AND he said, A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided between them the means of living. 13And not many days after, the younger son having gathered all together took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance, living profligately. 14And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want. 15 And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16And he would fain have filled himself with the pods that the swine did eat and no one gave to him. 17 And coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father have bread enough and to spare, and I am perishing here with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19I am no longer worthy to be called thy son. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, I am no longer worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet: 23And bring the fatted calf, kill it; and let us eat and be merry: 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25Now his elder son was in a field and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And having called one of the servants, he asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, Thy brother is come: and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was

angry, and would not go in: but his father coming out, intreated him. 29 And he answering, said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, and never did I transgress thy command: and thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But when this thy son was come, who hath devoured thy means of living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said to him, Child, thou art always with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 But it was needful to make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.

THE PARABLE OF THE UNJUST STEWard. Luke xvi., 1-13.

Perea.

1AND he said also to the disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was accused to him of wasting his possessions. 2And calling him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do, seeing that my lord is taking away from me the stewardship? I have not strength to dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4I know what I will do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses 5And having called every one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first, How much owest thou to my lord? 6And he said, A hundred baths* of oil And he said to him, Take thine agreements, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. 7Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, a hundred quarters of wheat. He saith to him, Take thine agreements and write eighty. 8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely for the sons of this age are in their generation wiser than the sons of light. 9And I say to you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of un

righteousness; that, when it shall have failed, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10 He who is faithful in the least, is faithful also in much and he who is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If, therefore, ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if ye were not faithful in that which is another's, who will give to you your own? 13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

THE PHARISEES REProved.

Luke xvi., 14-31.

PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS.

Perea.

14Now the Pharisees, being lovers of money, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15And he said to them, Ye are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. 16The law and the prophets were until John: from that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every one presseth into it. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of the law to fail. 18 Whoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. 19Now a certain man was rich, and was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted splendidly every day: 20 And a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: yea, even the dogs coming licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hades lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he, crying out, said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that thou in thy
