RESURRECTION OF LAZARUS.

lieveth in me, though he have died, shall live: 26 And every one who liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 27 She saith to him, Yes, Lord I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who cometh into the world. 28 And having said this, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and is calling thee. 29 When she heard this, she arose quickly, and came to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him. 31The Jews then who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, thinking that she goeth to the tomb to weep there. 32Then when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33Jesus therefore when he saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who come with her, groaned in the spirit, and was himself troubled, 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. 35Jesus wept. 36Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him! 37 And some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused even that this man should not have died? 38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus saith, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, saith to him, Lord, already he stinketh: for he hath been buried four days. 40 Jesus saith to her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude standing round I said this that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And having spoken these words, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44And he who was dead came forth, bound feet and hands with grave-clothes: and his face was bound round with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go.

JESUS WITHOUT A HOME.

JESUS NOT RECEIVED BY THE SAMARITANS. Luke ix., 53-55.

53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as one going to Jerusalem. 54And the disciples James and John seeing this, said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them? 55 But having turned, he rebuked them. And they went to another village.

Luke ix., 57-62. JESUS WITHOUT A HOME

57 And as they were going on their way, a certain man said to him, I will follow thee wherever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have roosts; but the Son of man hath not where he may lay his head. 59 And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 And he said to him, leave the dead to bury their own dead: but go thou and declare plainly the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go to bid farewell to those in my house. 62 And Jesus said to him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking to the things behind, is rightly disposed for the kingdom of God.

THE SENDING FORTH OF THE SEVENTY.

Luke x., 1-24.

Capharnaum.

Now after these things the Lord appointed also seventy others, and sent them two by two before his face into every city and place, where he himself was about to come. 2And he said to them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he may send forth labourers into his harvest. 3Go away: behold, I send you as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4Carry not a purse, nor wallet, nor sandals: salute no one by the way. 5 And into whatever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6And if a son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall return to you. 7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking the things they have: for the labourer is worthy of his

reward. Go not from house to house. 8And into whatever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat the things that are set before you: 9And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them, The kingdom of God is come nigh to you. 10But into whatever city ye enter, and they receive you not, going out into the streets of the same, say, 11Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth to our feet, we wipe off against you: but know ye this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh. 12But Ť say to you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. 13Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. 15 And thou, Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted to heaven? Thou shalt be brought down even to Hades. 16 He who heareth you heareth me; and he who despiseth_you despiseth me; and he who despiseth me despiseth Him who sent me. 17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us through thy name. 18 And he said to them, I saw Satan as lightning falling from the heaven. 19Behold, I have given to you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you. 20But in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names were written in heaven. 21In that hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of the heaven and the earth, that thou didst hide these things from wise and intelligent men, and didst reveal them to babes; even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. 22And having turned to the disciples he said, All things are delivered to me by my Father: and no one knoweth who the Son is except the Father; and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. 23 And having turned to the disciples he said, privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: 24 For I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see what things ye see, and have not seen

ETERNAL LIFE. THE GOOD SAMARITAN.

Luke x., 25-37.

Capharnaum. 25 AND, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 And he said to him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said to him, Thou hast answered rightly: this do, and thou shalt live. 29But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 30Jesus, taking up the question, said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who having both stripped him and wounded him, went away, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance a certain priest was going down that way: and having seen him passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise also a Levite, being at the place, came, and having seen him, passed by on the other side. 33But a certain Samaritan, as he was journeying, came to him: and seeing him, was moved with compassion, 34And coming to him, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow, he took out two denarii,* and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and whatever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay thee. 36 Who of these three seemeth to thee to have been neighbour to him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He who showed mercy on him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do thou likewise.

sister called Mary, who also was sitting at the feet of the Lord, listening to his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving and standing by, she said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 But the Lord answering said to her, Martha, Martha, thou art over careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from

ON PRAYER, INCLUDING THE LORD'S PRAYER. Luke xi., 1-13. 1AND it came to pass as he was in a certain place praying, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said to them, When ye pray, say, Father, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: 3Give us day by day our daily bread: 4And forgive us our sins, as we also forgive every one who is indebted to us: And lead us not into temptation. 5And he said to them, Who of you shall have a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6Since a friend of mine on his journey, has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him; 7And he answering from within should say, Trouble me not: the door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to thee. 8I say to you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needeth. 9And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. 10For every one who asketh, receiveth; and he who seeketh findeth; and to him who knocketh it shall be opened. 11What father among you, should his son ask for bread, will he give him a stone? or if a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 120r also, if he should ask for an egg, will he give him a scorpion? 13If then ye being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children: how much more shall the Father, who is from heaven, give the holy spirit to those who ask him?
