Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And having called a child, he set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily, I say to you, Unless ye are changed, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoever receiveth one such child in my name receiveth me. 6 But whoever shall cause one of these little ones believing in me, to sin, it were better for him that a millstone were hung upon his neck, and he were sunk in the depth of the sea. 7Woe to the world from stumbling blocks! for it must needs be that stumbling blocks come: but woe to the man through whom the stumbling block cometh! 8And if thy hand or thy foot cause thee to sin, cut it off, and cast it from thee it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or lame, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. 9And if thine eye doth cause thee to sin, pluck it out, and cast it from thee it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the gehenna of fire. 10 See that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father in heaven. 12What think ye? if a man have a hundred sheep, and one of them hath gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains, and going, he seeketh that which is gone astray. 13 And if he happen to find it, verily I say to you, he rejoiceth over it more than over the ninety-nine which went not astray. 14Thus it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. 15And if thy brother sin, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16But if he will not hear, take with thee one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he neglect to hear them, tell it to the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and the taxgatherer. 18Verily I say to you, whatever ye shall bind upon the earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever ye shall loose upon the earth shall be

loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, that if two of you shall agree on the earth about asking anything, it shall be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. 21Then Peter having come, said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? until seven times? 22Jesus saith to him, I say not to thee, Until seven times: but until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a man, a king, who wished to compare an account with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to compare, one was brought to him, a debtor of a myriad of talents.* 25 But he being unable to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26Then that servant falling down did homage to him, saying, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27Then the lord of that servant, moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But that servant going out, found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denariit; and having seized him, throttled him, saying, Pay whatever thou owest. 29Then his fellow servant falling down, besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee. 30 And he would not: but going out, he cast him into prison until he should pay the debt. 31Then his fellow servants seeing what was done, were very sorry, aud came and told their lord all that had been done. 32Then his lord having called him, saith to him, O wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou didst entreat me: 33Did it not behove thee also to pity thy fellow servant, as also I pitied thee? 34 And his lord, being indignant, delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was owing to him. 35 Thus also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother.

Jerusalem.

THE BRETHREN OF JESUS ADVISE HIM TO SHOW HIMSELF IN JERUSALEM.

John vii., 6-9, 14-30,

Capharnaum.

6JESUS saith to them, My time is not yet come: but your time is always ready. 7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8Go ye up to the feast: I go not up to this feast; for my time is not yet fulfilled. Having said these words, he remained in Galilee. 14 Now already it being the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and was teaching. 15Then the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, not having learned? 16Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17If any one desire to do his will, he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God, or I speak from myself. 18 He who speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he who seeketh his glory who sent him, the same is true, and unrighteousness is not in him. 19Did not Moses give you the law? and not one of you keepeth the law. Why seek ye to kill me? 20The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee? 21Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22 Moses hath given to you circumcision; (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man. 23 If a man on the sabbath receiveth circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry with me, because I have healed a man on the sabbath? 24Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment. 25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he whom they seek to kill? 26 And lo he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do the rulers know of a truth that this is the Christ? 27 But this man, we know whence he is; but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is. 28Then cried Jesus in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom ye know not: 29 But I know him: for I am from him, and

he hath sent me. 30 Therefore they were seeking to take him: but no one laid their hand on him, because his hour was not yet come. 31 And many of the multitude believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more signs than this man doeth ? 32The Pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers that they might take him. 33Then said Jesus, Yet a little time am I with you, and I go to him who sent me. 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am ye cannot come.

John vii. 37-39.

THE LAST DAY OF THE Feast.

37 Now in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any one thirst, let him come and drink. 38He who believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water. 39(But this he spoke concerning the Spirit, which they who believe on him should receive for the Spirit was not yet; because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

JESUS TEACHING IN THE TEMPLE.
THE LIGHT OF THE WOrld.

John viii., 12-58.

12THEN Jesus spoke again to them, saying, I am the light of the world: he who followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 13The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself: thy testimony is not true. 14Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and where I go; ye know not whence I come, or where I go. 15 Ye judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16And even if I do judge, my judgment is true for I am not alone, but I and he who sent me. 17 But it is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18I am he who beareth witness of myself, and the Father who sent me beareth witness concerning me. 19Therefore said they to him,

28Then

Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also. 20These words he spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple : and no one took him; for his hour was not yet come. 21Then he said again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: where I go, ye cannot come. 22Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Where I go, ye cannot come. 23 And he said to them, Ye are of those beneath; I am of those above: ye are of this world: I am not of this world. 241 said to you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. 25Then they said to him, Who art thou? Jesus then said to them, What I say to you, even from the first. have many things to say and to judge concerning you: but he who sent me is true; and I speak to the world what things I heard from him. 27They understood not that he spoke to them of the Father. said Jesus: When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am he, and from myself I do nothing; but as the Father hath taught me, I speak these things. 29 And he who sent me, is with me; he hath not left me alone, for I do always those things that please him. 30As he spoke these words, many believed on him. 31Therefore said Jesus to those Jews who believed on him, If ye continue in my word, ye are truly my disciples; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any one: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one who committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever; the son abideth for ever. 36If therefore the son shall set you free, ye shall be free indeed. 37I know that ye are Abraham's seed: but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. 38I speak what I have seen with my Father: and ye then do what ye have heard from your father. 39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them, If ye were Abraham's
