18 THE APPOINTMENT OF THE 12 APOSTLES.

THE CORN FIELD ON THE SABBATH DAY, ON THE WAY TO GALILEE.

Matt. xii, 3-8.

Mark ii., 25-28. Luke vi., 3 to 5.

3BUT He said to them (the Pharisees), Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they who were with him; 4How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the loaves of the offering, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but for the priests alone? 50r have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are blameless ? 6But I say to you, That one greater than the temple is here. 7 And if ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8For the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath.

THE WITHERED HAND.

Galilee.

Matt. xii., 10-13. 10 AND, behold, a man having a withered hand; And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? that they might accuse him. 11And he said to them, What man shall there be among you, who shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath, will he not lay hold of it, and lift it out? 12 How much therefore is a man better than a sheep! So that it is lawful to do good on the sabbath. 13Then saith he to the man, Stretch out thine hand. And he stretched it out; and it was restored sound as the other.

THE APPOINTMENT OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES. Luke vi., 12-16.

Near Capharnaum.

12AND it came to pass in those days, that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he was passing the night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, he called his dis

ciples: and chose from them twelve, whom also he named apostles; 14Simon, (whom he also named Peter), and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, 15And Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscarioth, who became a traitor.

THE SERMON ON THE LEVEL.

Luke vi., 17-20-49.

17 AND having come down with them he stood on a level place and a great multitude of his disciples and a great number of the people. 20 And lifting up his eyes towards his disciples, he said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are ye who hunger now for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye who weep now for ye shall laugh. 22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall cast you off, and shall reproach and cast out your name as evil on account of the Son of man. 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for thus their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe unto you who are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 25 Woe unto you who are full now! for ye shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. 27 But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 Bless those who curse you, pray for those who insult you.

29To him who striketh thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him taking away thy cloak keep not back thy coat also. 30Give to every one who asketh of thee; and from him taking away thy goods ask them not again. 31And as ye wish that men should do to you, do ye also likewise to them. 32 For if ye love those who love you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also love those who love them. 33 And if also ye do good to them who do good to you, have ye ? sinners also do the same. lend to them from whom ye hope to thanks have ye? also sinners lend to sinners, that they

may receive again as much. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Highest: for he is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Be merciful, as your Father is merciful. 37 And judge not, and ye shall not be judged and condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into your bosom: For with what measure ye measure it shall be measured back to you. 39 And he spoke also a parable to them. Can the blind lead the blind? will they not both fall into a ditch ? 40The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one who is made perfect shall be as his teacher. 41And why beholdest thou the splinter in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam in thine own eye? 42 How canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the splinter that is in thine eye, thou thyself not seeing the beam in thine own eye? Hypocrite, first cast out the beam from thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the splinter that is in thy brother's eye. 43 For there is no good tree that beareth bad fruit; nor again doth a bad tree bear good fruit. 44For each tree is known by its own fruit: for from thorns they do not gather figs, nor from a bramble bush do they gather grapes. 45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth the good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth the evil for from the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46 And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not what I say? 47 Every one who cometh to me, and heareth my words, and obeyeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who hath dug and hollowed out and laid the foundation on the rock but a flood having risen, the stream beat against that house, but could not shake it; for it was well built. 49 But he who heard and obeyed not, is like a man who built a house upon the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

TO THE CENTURION ASKING JESUS TO HEAL HIS SERVANT. Matt viii, 7-13. Luke vii., 1-10.

7(JESUS) saith to him, I will come and heal him. 8 But the centurion answering said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: but only say the word and my servant shall be healed. 9For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 And Jesus having heard this marvelled, and said to those who followed, Verily I say to you, I have not found such great faith in Israel. 11 And I say to you, That many shall come from the east and the west, and shall recline with Abraham, and Isaac and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom shall go out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, Go thy way as thou hast believed be it done to thee. And the servant was healed in that hour.

THE SON OF THE WIDOW AT NAIN.

Luke vii., 12-15,

12 Now as he drew nigh to the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow and a great multitude of the city was with her. 13 And seeing her the Lord was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not. 14And on coming up he touched the bier: and the bearers stood still; and he said, Young man, I say to thee, Arise. 15And he who was dead sat up, and began to speak: and he delivered him to his mother.

THE MESSENGERS FROM JOHN THE BAPTIST. Matt. xi., 4-6. Luke vii., 18-23.

4JESUS answering said to them, Go and tell John what ye hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6And blessed is he, whoever shall not stumble at me.

with her hair. 45Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head, with oil thou didst not anoint: but she anointed my feet with ointment. 470n which account I say to thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven, he loveth little. 48 And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49 And they who reclined at table with him began to say within themselves, Who is this who forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

AND it came to pass afterwards, that he went through city and village, preaching and proclaiming the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve with him.

THE BLIND AND DUMB DEMONIAC.

Matt. xii., 22-37.

22THEN was brought to him a demoniac blind and dumb; and he healed him so that the dumb man spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed, and said, Is this the son of David? 24But the Pharisees having heard it said, This man casteth not out demons, but by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons. 25 And knowing their thoughts, he said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is desolated; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. 26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebul cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come to you. 29Or how can any one enter the house of the strong man and plunder his goods, except he first bind the strong man, and then he can plunder his house. 30 He who is not with me is against me; and he who gathereth not with me scattereth. 31On this account I say to you, All sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to men: but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32And whoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whoever speaketh against the
