they shall condemn him to death, 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify and the third day he shall be raised.

THE INTERVIEW OF SALOME AND HER TWO SONS WITH JESUS. Matt. xx., 20-28.

Mark x., 35-45.

West of Jordan.

23 He

20 THEN came to him the mother of the Sons of Zebedee with her sons, doing homage and asking something from him. 21 And he said to her, What wilt thou? She saith to him, Say that these my two sons may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left, in thy kingdom. 22 But Jesus answering, said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? They say to him, We are able. saith to them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, this is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared by my Father. 24 And the ten having heard it, were much displeased with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus having called them, said, Ye know that the rulers of the Gentiles rule imperiously over them, and the great men oppress them. 26It shall not be so among you: but whoever may wish to be great among you, shall be your ministrant; 27 And whoever may wish to be first among you, shall be your servant: 28 As the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark x., 46-52.

West of Jericho. 46 AND they come to Jericho: and as he was going from Jericho and his disciples and a great multitude, Bartimæus, the son of Timæus, a blind beggar, sat by the way side. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and to say, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. 48 And many rebuked him that he should be silent: but he cried much more: Son of David, have mercy on me. 49 And Jesus standing still, said, Call him. And they call the blind man, saying to him, Be of good courage, rise; he calleth thee. 50 And casting away his garment he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51And Jesus answering said to him, What wilt thou that I should do to thee? The blind man said to him, Rabboni, that I might receive my sight. 52 And Jesus said to him, go thy way; thy faith hath healed thee. JESUS AND ZACCHEUS.

West of Jericho.

1AND having entered, he was passing through Jericho. 2 And, behold, a man, by name called Zacchæus, who was the chief of the tax gatherers, and he was rich. 3And he sought to see Jesus who he is; and could not from the multitude, because he was short in stature. 4 And running forward he climbed up a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. 5And as he came to the place, Jesus having looked up, said to him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to-day I must abide in thy house. 6And hastening, he came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to lodge with a man who is a sinner. 8 And Zacchæus standing, said to the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my pos

sessions I give to the poor: and if I have taken anything from any man by extortion I restore him fourfold. 9 And Jesus said to him, To-day salvation is come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save what was lost.

11 AND as they were hearing these things, he added and spoke a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and they thought that the kingdom of God would immediately appear. 12 He said then: A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13And having called ten of his servants, he gave to them ten mince, and said to them, Trade with them till I come. 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. 15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know what each had gained by trading. 16Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy mina* hath gained ten mince. 17 And he said to him, Well done, thou good servant because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. 18And the second came, saying, Lord, thy mina hath gained five mince. 19 And he said also to this man, Be thou also over five cities. 20 And the other came, saying, Lord, behold thy mina, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up what thou layedst not down, and reapest what thou didst not sow. 22 He saith to him, Out of thy mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow: 23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into a bank? that at my coming I might have required it with interest. 24 And he said to those who stood him the mina and give it to him that

hath ten mince. 25 And they said to him, Lord he hath ten minæ. 261 say to you, That to every one who hath shall be given; and from him who hath not, even what he hath shall be taken away. 27 But those mine enemies, who would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

JESUS IN BETHANY AT SUPPER IN THE HOUSE OF SIMON THE
Matt. xxvi., 6-13.
LEPER.

Mark xiv., 1-9.

1AFTER two days was the passover, and the feast of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. 2For they said, Not at the feast, lest there be a tumult of the people. 3And he being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining, a woman came having an alabaster vase of ointment of spikenard, very precious: and having broken open the alabaster vase, she poured out of it on his head. 4And there were some much displeased within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment? 5For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii,* and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 6 But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and when ye will, ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 8She hath done what she could: she came beforehand to anoint my body for the burial. 9Verily I say to you, wherever the gospel shall be preached in the whole world, also what she hath done shall be spoken of as a memorial of her.

John xii., 1-8.

1THEN Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom Jesus raised from the dead. 2Then they made him a supper there and Martha served but Lazarus was one of those reclining with him. Then Mary having taken a pound of ointment of pure spikenard, very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the

angry, and would not go in: but his father coming out, intreated him. 29 And he answering, said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, and never did I transgress thy command: and thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends : 30 But when this thy son was come, who hath devoured thy means of living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said to him, Child, thou art always with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 But it was needful to make merry, and be glad for this thy brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.

1AND he said also to the disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was accused to him of wasting his possessions. 2And calling him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do, seeing that my lord is taking away from me the stewardship? I have not strength to dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4I know what I will do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses 5And having called every one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first, How much owest thou to my lord? 6And he said, A hundred baths* of oil And he said to him, Take thine agreements, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. 7Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, a hundred quarters of wheat. He saith to him, Take thine agreements and write eighty. 8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely for the sons of this age are in their generation wiser than the sons of light. 9And I say to you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of un
