And having sat down in the boat he taught the multitudes. 4Now when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5And Simon answering said, Master, we have toiled through the whole night and have taken nothing but at thy word I will let down the nets. 6And having done this they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their nets were bursting. 10 And Jesus said to Simon, Fear not; henceforth thou shalt be catching men. 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, having left all they followed him. THE CLEANSING OF A LEPer. 12 AND it came to pass, when he was in one of the cities, behold a man full of leprosy: and seeing Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst cleanse me. 13 And having stretched forth his hand, he touched him, saying, I will: be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 14 And he charged him to tell no one: but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. HEALING A PARALYTIC AND FORGIVING HIS SINS. Who can forgive sins except God alone? 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he, answering, said to them, What are ye reasoning in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority upon earth to forgive sins, (he said to the paralytic), say to thee, Arise, take up thy couch and go to thy house. 25 And immediately rising up before them, he took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And astonishment seized on all, and they glorified God, and were full of fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day. THE CALLING OF LEVI THE TAXGATHERER AND HIS Luke v, 27-52. GREAT FEAST. 27 AND after these things he went forth and beheld a taxgatherer by name Levi, sitting at the tax office, and said to him, Follow me. 28 And leaving all things he rose up, and followed him. 29And Levi made a great feast for him in his house and there was a great company of taxgatherers and others who were reclining with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with the taxgatherers and sinners ? 31 And Jesus answering said to them, They who are healthy need not a physician; but they who are ill. 321 came not to call righteous men, but sinners to repentance. WHY THE DISCIPLES OF JESUS DID NOT FAST. Luke v., 33-35. 33AND they said to him, The disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise those of the NEW WINE TO BE PUT INTO NEW SKINS. 15 Pharisees; but thine eat and drink. 34 But Jesus said to them, Can ye make the sons of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 35But the days will come, even when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days. THE PARABLE OF THE GARMENT. AND OF NEW WINE BEING PUT INTO OLD SKINS. Luke v., 36, 39. 36 AND he spoke also to them a parable: No one having rent a piece from a new garment putteth it upon an old garment; if otherwise, both the new will make a rent, and the piece from the new will not agree with the old. 37 And no one putteth new wine into old skins; if otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into new skins. 39 And no one drinking old wine desireth new, for he saith, The old is good. OW a certain man was there having had his infir seeing man lying, and knowing that he had been already a long time infirm, saith to him, Wilt thou be made well? 7The infirm man answered him, Lord I have no man when the water is stirred to put me into the pool: 16 THE POOL OF BETHZATHA. 15The but while I am coming another goeth down before me. 8Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy bed and walk. 9And the man was made well, and took up his bed and walked: and that day was the Sabbath. 10The Jews therefore said to him who had been cured, It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11 He answered them, He who made me well, the same said to me, Take up thy bed and walk. 12They asked him Who is the man who said to thee, Take it up and walk? 13But the infirm man knew not who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in the place. 14 After these things Jesus findeth him in the temple and said to him, Behold thou art made well: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, who had made him well. 16And on this account the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. 17 But he answered them, My Father worketh until now, and I work. 18On this account the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God. 19Therefore Jesus answered and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing from himself, except what he seeth the father doing: for what things he doeth, these also doeth the Son in like manner. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that he himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth life; even so also the Son giveth life to whom he will. 22 For neither doth the Father judge anyone, but hath committed all judgment to the Son: 23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father who sent him. 24Verily, verily, I say to you, he who heareth my word, and believeth on him who sent me, hath everlasting life, and doth not come into condemnation; but hath passed from death into life. 25 Verily, verily, I say to you, An hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they who hear shall live. 26 For as the Father CHRIST'S DISCOURSE IN THE TEMPLE. 17 hath life in himself, so also hath he given to the Son to have life in himself. 27 And he hath given him authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they who have done good, to a resurrection of life; they who have done evil to a resurrection of judgment. 30I can from mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just because I seek not my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 31If I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is not true: 32There is another who beareth witness concerning me; and ye know that the testimony which he testifieth of me is true. 33 Ye have sent to John, and he hath testified to the truth. 34 But I receive not the testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye may be saved. 35 He was the burning and shining lamp and ye were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36But the testimony I have is greater than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me, he hath borne witness concerning me: ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think to have eternal life and they are testifying concerning me. 40 And ye are not willing to come to me, that ye may have life. 411 receive not glory from men; 42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God among yourselves. 431I have come in the name of my Father, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 14How can ye believe, receiving glory from one another, and seek not the glory that cometh from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one who accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye have hoped. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote concerning me. if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? 47 But |
