13-18. JESUS APPEARS TO MARY.

13THEY say to her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 Having said these words, she turned backward, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15Jesus saith to her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seckest thou? She, supposing that he was the gardener, saith to him, Lord, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16Jesus saith to her, Mary! She having turned, saith to him in the Hebrew tongue, Rabbouni! which is to say, Teacher, 17Jesus saith to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to the Father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18Mary the Magdalene cometh and telleth the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and he had said these things to her.

ON THE WAY TO EMMAUS.

13 AND, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, distant sixty stadia* from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked to each other of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass while they were talking and reasoning together, Jesus himself also drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not recognize him. 17 And he said to them, What are these words that ye exchange one with another, as ye walk? and they stood with sorrowful countenances. 18And one by name Cleopas, answering said to him, Dost thou sojourn alone in Jerusalem, and knowest not these things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word

20 And how the

before God and all the people: chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21But we were hoping that it had been he who was about to redeem Israel and beside all, this is the third day since these things were done. 22 Moreover certain women also of our company made us astonished, who were early at the tomb; 23 And not having found his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say he is living. 24 And certain of those with us went to the tomb and found it thus according also as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25 And he said to them, O thoughtless and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 And they drew nigh to the village, whither they were going and he made as though he was going further. 29 And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as he reclined at table with them, on taking the bread, he blessed it, and having broken he gave it to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, as he talked with us by the way, and as he opened to us the scriptures?

they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 43 And he took it, and did eat before them. 44And he said to them, These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets and the Psalms concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. 46And he said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance for the remission of sins should be preached in his name among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48Ye are witnesses of these things. 49And, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be endued with power from on high.

50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 And it came to pass that while he was blessing them, he parted from them. 52And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53And they were continually in the temple, blessing God.

19Then it being evening on that day, the first of the week, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were through fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith to them, Peace be to you. 20 And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21Then he said to them again, Peace be to you: as the Father hath sent me, I also send you. 22 And having said this, he breathed on them, and saith to them, Receive the Holy Spirit: 23If ye remit the sins of any, they are remitted to them; if ye retain the sins of any, they are retained.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25Then the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I shall see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days his disciples were again within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be to you. 27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands: and reach thy hand, and thrust it into my side and be not faithless, but believing. 28Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God. 29Jesus saith to him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they who have not seen and have believed.

8And having departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy; they ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they having come near laid hold of his feet, and did him homage. 10Then Jesus saith to them, Be not afraid go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And seeing him they did him homage: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All power was given to me in heaven and on earth. 19Go ye and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you all the days until the end of the age.

John xxi, 1 24. THE LAKE OF TIBERIAS.

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the lake of Tiberias; and thus he showed himself. 2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3Simon Peter saith to them, I am going to fish. They say to him, We also are coming with thee.

Then they went forth, and entered into the boat, and on that night they caught nothing. 4But the morning having already come, Jesus stood on the shore: the disciples however knew not that it was Jesus. 5Then Jesus saith to them, Children, have ye any food? They answered him, No, 6He saith to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat and ye shall find. Then they cast and no longer were they able to drag it for the multitude of fishes. 7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith to Peter, It is the Lord. Then Simon Peter having heard that it is the Lord, girt on his fisher's coat, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the lake. 8And the other disciples came in the little boat; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits *dragging the net of fishes. 9As soon then as they were come to land they see a fire of charcoal, and a little fish lying thereon, and bread. 10Jesus saith to them, Bring some of the fishes which ye have now caught. 11Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty three and though there were so many, the net was not broken. 12Jesus saith to them, Come, and dine. And not one of the disciples dared to ask him, Who art thou? knowing that he is the Lord. 13Jesus cometh, and taketh the bread, and giveth to them, and the fish likewise. 14This is already the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after he was risen from the dead. 15 When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter; Simon, son of John, lovest thou ne more than these? He saith to him, Yes, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him, Feed my lambs. 16He saith to him again a second time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me ? He saith to him, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith to him the third time Simon son of John, lovest thou me ? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he saith to him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him, Feed my sheep. 18Verily, verily, I
