THE DEATH OF JESUS.

Aecording to John xix, 16-30.

:

16THEN they took Jesus, 17 And himself bearing his cross, he went forth into the place called Kranion, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19And Pilate also wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And it was written, JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. 23The soldiers therefore when they had crucified Jesus took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled, They parted my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast the lot. These things therefore the soldiers did. 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Klopas, and Mary the Magdalene. 26Jesus therefore seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 A vessel was brought full of vinegar: then a sponge full of vinegar was fixed upon a hyssop stalk, and put to his mouth. 30When, therefore, he had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and bowing his head, gave up his spirit.

AFTER HIS RESURRECTION.

John xx., 13-18. JESUS APPEARS TO MARY.

13THEY say to her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 Having said these words, she turned backward, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith to her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seckest thou? She, supposing that he was the gardener, saith to him, Lord, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16Jesus saith to her, Mary! She having turned, saith to him in the Hebrew tongue, Rabbouni! which is to say, Teacher, 17Jesus saith to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to the Father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18Mary the Magdalene cometh and telleth the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and he had said these things to her.

Luke xxiv., 13-32.

ON THE WAY TO EMMAUS.

13AND, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, distant sixty stadia* from Jerusalem. 14And they talked to each other of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass while they were talking and reasoning together, Jesus himself also drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not recognize him. 17 And he said to them, What are these words that ye exchange one with another, as ye walk ? and they stood with sorrowful countenances. 18 And one by name Cleopas, answering said to him, Dost thou sojourn alone in Jerusalem, and knowest not these things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word

TO THE ELEVEN DISCIPLES.

20 And how the

before God and all the people: chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 2! But we were hoping that it had been he who was about to redeem Israel and beside all, this is the third day since these things were done. 22 Moreover certain women also of our company made us astonished, who were early at the tomb; 23 And not having found his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say he is living. 24 And certain of those with us went to the tomb and found it thus according also as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25 And he said to them, O thoughtless and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 And they drew nigh to the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he was going further. 29 And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as he reclined at table with them, on taking the bread, he blessed it, and having broken he gave it to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, as he talked with us by the way, and as he opened to us the scriptures?

TO THE ELEVEN DISCIPLES, AND THE LAST APPEARANCE OF JESUS, ACCORDING TO LUKE.

Luke xxiv, 36-43.

36 And as they were saying these things he himself stood in the midst of them. 37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, Why are ye troubled, and why do reasonings arise in your hearts ? 39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. 41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have ye here any food? 42 And

they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 43 And he took it, and did eat before them. 44And he said to them, These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets and the Psalms concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. 46 And he said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance for the remission of sins should be preached in his name among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 Ye are witnesses of these things. 49And, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be endued with power from on high.

50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 And it came to pass that while he was blessing them, he parted from them. 52And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53 And they were continually in the temple, blessing God.

TO TEN OF THE DISCIPLES AND THEN TO THE ELEVENTH. John xx., 19-29.

19Then it being evening on that day, the first of the week, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were through fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith to them, Peace be to you. 20 And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21Then he said to them again, Peace be to you as the Father hath sent me, I also send you. 22 And having said this, he breathed on them, and saith to them, Receive the Holy Spirit: 23If ye remit the sins of any, they are remitted to them; if ye retain the sins of any, they are retained.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25Then the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I shall see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days his disciples were again within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be to you. 27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands and reach thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God. 29Jesus saith to him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they who have not seen and have believed.

TO THE TWO WOMEN WHO HAD VISITED HIS SEPULCHRE. Matthew xxviii, 8. 10. Near Jerusalem.

8And having departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy; they ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they having come near laid hold of his feet, and did him homage. 10Then Jesus saith to them, Be not afraid go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Matthew xxviii, 16, 20.

MOUNT TABOR.

16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And seeing him they did him homage: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All power was given to me in heaven and on earth. 19Go ye and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you all the days until the end of the age.

John xxi, 1 24. THE LAKE OF TIBERIAS.

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the lake of Tiberias; and thus he showed himself. 2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3Simon Peter saith to them, fish. They say to him, We also are coming with thee. am going to
