remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink from this time of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father. 30 And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.

Mark xiv., 23-26.

:

23 AND taking a cup, having given thanks, he gave it to them and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, being poured out for many. 25 Verily I say to you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.

Luke xxii., 20.

LIKEWISE also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood being poured out in your behalf.

1 Cor., xi., 25.

AFTER the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me.

THE DISCOURSES OF JESUS IN THE SUPPER CHAMBER. John xiv-xv-xvi.

LET not your heart be troubled believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father's house are many mansions: but if not, I would have told you. For Í go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to myself; that where am, ye may be also. 4And where I go ye know the way. 5Thomas saith to him, Lord, we know not where thou goest; and how know we the way? 6Jesus saith to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh to the Father, except through me. 7If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8Philip saith to him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it is sufficient for us. 9 Jesus saith to him, Am I so long time with you, and hast thou not known me, Philip ? he who hath seen me

hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? the words that I speak to you I speak not from myself: but the Father who dwelleth in me, doeth his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: but if not believe on account of the works themselves. 12Verily, verily, I say to you, He who believeth in me, the works that I do he shall do also; and he shall do greater than these; because I go to the Father. 13 And whatever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If ye shall ask me any thing in my name, I will do it. 15If ye love me keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever; 17The Spirit of truth; which the world cannot receive, because it seeth it not, neither knoweth it: but ye know it; for it dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18I will not leave you orphans: I am coming to you. 19Yet a little time, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me because I live, ye shall live also. 20In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He who hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is who loveth me and he who loveth me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22Judas saith to him (not Iscariot), Lord, and how is it that thou art about to manifest thyself to us, and not to the world? 23Jesus answered and said to him, If any one love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make an abode with him. 24 He who loveth me not, keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me. 25These things have I spoken to you while abiding with you, 26 But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and will remind you of all things that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 Ye have heard that I said to you, I go away, and am coming

to you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. 30No longer will I talk much with you for the ruler of the world cometh, and in me he hath nothing. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

XV. I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me not bearing fruit he taketh it away and every branch bearing fruit, he pruneth it, that it may bear more fruit. 3Ye are pure already through the word which I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5I am the vine, ye are the branches. He who abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing, 6If any one abide not in me, he is cast forth as the branch, and is withered; and they gather it, and cast it into the fire, and it is burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever ye may wish, and it shall be done to you. 8In this is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; and ye shall become my disciples. 9As the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: continue ye in my love. 10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I also have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11These things have I spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be made full. 12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do what I command you. 151 call you no longer servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and your fruit might remain: that whatever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he

may give it you. 17These things I command you, that ye love one another. 18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me first. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hateth you. 20Remember the word which I have spoken to you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my word they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they had not had sin: but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23He who hateth me hateth my Father also. 24If I had not done among them the works which no other man did, they had not had sin but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. 26 When the Comforter is come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify concerning me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye are with me from the beginning.

xvi. THESE things have I spoken to you, that ye should not be made to fall away. 2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that every one killing you will think that he offereth a service to God. 3And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But these things have I told you, that when the hour shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not to you at the beginning, because I was with you. 5But now I go away to him who sent me; and not one of you asketh me, Where goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you. 8And having come he will convict the world concerning sin,

and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment. 9 Concerning sin, indeed, because they believe not on me: 10 And concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye see me no more; 11 And concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 121 have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatever he heareth he shall speak and he will tell you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall tell it to you. 15 All things as many as the Father hath are mine on this account I said, that he taketh of mine, and shall tell it to you. 16A little while, and ye see me no longer and again, a little while, and ye shall see me : 17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye shall not see me; and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? and, Because I go to the Father? 18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, the little while? we know not what he saith. 19Jesus knew that they wished to ask him, and said to them, Do ye inquire among yourselves about this because I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me and again, a little while, and ye shall see me ? 20Verily, verily, Í say to you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21The woman when she is in labour hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she hath given birth to the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. 22 And ye therefore now indeed have sorrow but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh from you. 23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father, he will give it to you, in my name. 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full. 25These things have I spoken to you in proverbs: the hour cometh when I shall no longer speak to you in proverbs, but I shall *ell you plainly of the Father. 26In that day ye shall
