fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would“. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you, that they who do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are past away, behold all things are become news. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul". Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end, for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance; but' as he who hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy! Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect *. For ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light'. Sect. 6. Without such purity, no privileges, no pro
fession can be of any avail. Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doth good is of God; but he that doth 'evil, hath not seen God ”. Behold thou art called

a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, and knowest bis will, and approvest the things that are more excellent b. Thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself ? Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking of the law dishonourest thou God d? For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law; but if thou be breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcisiono ? For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel; neither because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children'.
. He is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter ; whose praise is not of man, but of God. For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature". For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost'. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord ? and who shall stand in his holy place ? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart?
The foolish shall not stand in thy sight; thou hatest all workers of iniquity“,
They that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his ". And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lustso. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself un-' spotted from the world P.
Sect. 7. To render us pure and holy was one great
purpose for which the Son of God was manifested.
The grace of God that bringeth salvation, hath appeared unto all men; teaching us, that denying ungodliness, and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ
, who gave bimself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. For Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it, with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself, a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. And you that were some tine alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled, in the body of his flesh, through death, to present you holy and unblamable, and unreprovable in his sight. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil'. Unto you God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities; from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God"; because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, and through the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ". For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified'. For as by one man's disobedience, many were made sinners; so by the obedience of one, many shall be made righteous"; that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord'; who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. $7. Sect. 8. By the grace of God in Christ Jesus we are
sanctified; and his redeeming love affords the most powerful motive to purity and holiness.
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid; yea, we establish the law ?. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? 'Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death ; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life". Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For we ourselves also were sometime foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures ; but after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghostd. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God'. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, and without blame before him in love ; in whom also ye are circumcised, with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ". For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before-ordained that we should walk in them! For as much then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise
with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sin ; that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh, to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, banquetings, and abominable idolatries". But now you also put off all these ; seeing you have put off the old man with his deeds'; and have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit"; and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him that created him”. Now, if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with himo. Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin; but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin; but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead; and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God”. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye, who were the servants of sin, have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness?; ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life'. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord ; walk as children of the light, proving what is acceptable unto the Lord'. For we all with open face, beholding, as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord'. For the love of Christ constraineth us, because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead; and that he died for
