ADOPTING CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF LAW.

POWERS AND DUTIES OF CITIES.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Fall River as follows:

SECTION 1. Sections six, seven, eight, nine, and ten, Laws adopted. of chapter nineteen of the General Statutes, entitled " Of by city. certain Powers and Duties of Cities" are hereby adopted.

FISHERIES.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Fall River as follows:

SECTION 1. Section two, of chapter eighty-three of the Act adopted. General Statutes, entitled, "Fisheries," is hereby adopted.

SECT. 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage.

PREVENTION OF FIRES.

AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING AN ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE FOR THE
PREVENTION OF FIRES IN CITIES AND TOWNS.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Fall River as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 243 of the acts of the Legislature of Massachusetts in the year 1872 is hereby adopted.

SECT. 2. This ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage.

SIDE-WALKS.

AN ORDINANCE IN RELATION TO SIDE-WALKS.

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Fall River as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 303 of the General Laws, being an act entitled, "An act in relation to side-walks in cities," passed by the Legislature of Massachusetts and

Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Fall River as follows:

SECTION 1. The City Almshouse is hereby provided, in pursuance of Chap. 262 of the Acts of the Legislature of 1873, entitled, "An act concerning truant children and absentees from school," as a suitable place, for the con- Confinement finement, discipline, and instruction of the classes of chil. of truants, etc. dren referred to in this ordinance, until otherwise ordered. Said children shall be inmates of the House, and be under the general supervision and control of the superintendent thereof.

SECT. 2. The school committee shall have full power

to appoint a teacher, to instruct the children confined in Teacher at said institution; and shall have the same control over all Almshouse. matters relating thereto, as they have over the public schools of the city.

SECT. 3. The school committee shall annually appoint,

and fix the compensation of two or more suitable persons, Two or more to be designated as truant officers, who shall, under the truant officers. direction of said committee, inquire into all cases arising under this ordinance; and who shall alone be authorized in case of its violation, to make complaint therefor, and carry into execution the judgment thereon.

SECT. 4. Any habitual truant, or any child between the ages of seven and fifteen years, who may be found wandering about in the streets or public places of the city, having no lawful occupation or business, not attending school, and growing up in ignorance, shall be taken into custody by either of said officers and returned to the school to which he or she may belong; and the parent or guardian of said child shall be notified thereof at once by said officers.

SECT. 5. Any child, or habitual truant, who may have been once taken into custody and returned to school as having jurisdic-provided for in the previous section, and who may be found again wandering about in the streets and public places of the city, having no lawful occupation or business, not attending school, and growing up in ignorance, shall be taken into custody by either of said officers, who shall, within twenty-four hours thereafter, make a complaint against said child therefor to some court having competent jurisdiction.

SECT. 6. Any minor convicted under this ordinance of truant shall be being an habitual truant, or of wandering about in the streets and public places of the city, having no lawful employment or business, not attending school, and growing up in ignorance, shall be committed to the institution named in Sect. 1 of this ordinance, for a period of time not exceeding two years, as the justice or court having jurisdiction may determine. Any minor so committed may, upon proof of amendment, or for other sufficient cause shown upon a hearing of the case, be discharged by such justice or court.

SECT. 7. Any child under sixteen years of age, who, by reason of the neglect, crime, drunkenness or other vices of parents, or from orphanage, is suffered to be
