bitants under the projecting cliffs which hang over it. Torrents of water burst forth from the convulfed fides of Kader Idris, which deluged the little vale beneath. The Marian, where the militia are exercifed, was covered witha kind of lava near three feet deep; but what is chiefly regretted, is the lofs of the admired bridge, called Bonty Bondigion, which, upon examination, had no foundation, the lowest ftone being above the furface of the earth.

The lord mayor of London fent to lord Rochfort, to know when it would be proper to wait upon his majefty with the petition of the livery of London; and received for anfwer, that it was a matter not in his department.

27th.1 His lordship waited upon "lord Weymouth; but was told his lordship was not at home. He therefore left his bufinefs, and in return received the card prefixed to the petition. (See the Appendix.)

30th.

The fheriffs went to court, and requested an audience; which being granted, his majefty was pleafed to appoint Wednesday the 5th of July to receive the peti

tion.

This day the firft ftone of a new bridge to be built over the Severn at Shrewsbury, was laid by fir John Aftley, bart.

In the Rev. Mr. Whitefield's tabernacle in Tottenham-court-road, is the following epitaph:

"To the memory of Mrs. Whitefield, who, after thirty years ftrong and frequent manifeftations of her Redeemer's love, mixed with ftrong and frequent ftrugglings against the buffetings of Satan, many fickneffes and indwellings of fin, was joyfully releafed Aug. the-1768"

Letters from Jamaica bring ad vice of the fortunate difcovery of a confpiracy among the negroes of Kingston, the capital of that island. Their plan was to fet the town on fire in different places; and when the inhabitants were bufy in extinguishing the flames the confpirators were to fall upon them, and to put them to death without mercy. The difcovery was made by a black girl, who told the ftory to a Jew that kept her; he immediately informed the colonel of the militia, who muftered his men privately, and went to the place of rendezvous, where he found about 300 armed negroes, whom he furprized, and took feveral of them prisoners, many of whom have fince been executed. It is added, that the infurrection was to have been general throughout the island.

After many flying reports about the fuccefs of the Corfican army, and of the defeat of the French in that ifland, which were univerfally believed at the beginning of the prefent month, the contrary is now found to be the truth; and that the Corficans, either intimidated by the fuperior number of the French forces, or corrupted by the allurement of French gold, deferted their leader in the day of battle, laid down their arms, and fubmitted to the yoke of France. Corte, the capital of the ifland, furrendered without beinginvefted; and the brave Paoli, finding himself deferted, betrayed, deluded, and even reproached, by his worthlefs countrymen, is retired with a few chofen followers to the mountains, there to meditate an efcape. The French have offered 2000 louisd'ors for apprehending him.

They write from Paris, that on the festival of Corpus Chrifti the

fieur Torre opened his new Vauxhall, near St. Martin's gate, under the denomination of the Feafts of Tempe. He has laid out upwards of 50,000 crowns to establish this place of entertainment, which is to beopen Sundays and Thurfdays. It was calculated that there were between ten and twelve thousand perfons prefent the first evening: they pay half a crown admittance; and all the opulent families, both of court and city, feem eager to fhut up and ftifle themselves there, inftead of go ing to breathe the pure air in the public walks.

The dreadful fire that happened at Koningberg broke out at a baker's fhop about three o'clock in the morning, and destroyed a great number of magazines filled with corn, wine, and rich merchandize; upwards of two hundred edifices were laid in ashes, and the lofs is computed at feveral millions of rix-dollars.

The emperor of Germany paid a vifit to the Sardinian court in his way to Vienna from Rome. He dined with his Sardinian majefty, and in the afternoon accompanied his majefty to the Corfo.

Mrs. Stuart, of Mary-le-bone, near the Grotto, was delivered of three children, a boy and two girls, who were baptized the next day by the names of John, Harriet, and Anne.

His grace the duke of Grafton was inftalled chancellor of the univerfity of Cambridge, and afterwards dined in a very fplendid manner in Trinity-college-hall, attended by the archbishop of Canterbury, the duke of Bedford, marquis of Grandby, lord Sandwich, lord North, lord Weymouth, a great number of the principal nobility, foreign minifters, and gentlemen of the first diftinction. A grand anthem was performed on this occafion; and an ode, compofed by Mr. Gray, the author of the celebrated Elegy in a country church-yard.

Mr. Derman's fugar-houfe, in Black-friars, was burnt to the ground.

A large body of journeymen weavers affembled in Spital-fields, and cut the work to pieces in feveral looms, but difperfed without doing any other mischief.

ty, and the representatives of fir Stephen Evance, bart. then a very great banker. The original tranfactions which gave birth to the cause passed upwards of fourfcore years ago, fince which æra, with but few intervals, a fuit and fuits have been depending. This was the iffue diThis was the iffue directed by the house of lords, upon an appeal from a decree of the court of chancery, to enquire into the facts of a fpoliation complained of by fir Stephen's having fraudulently deftroyed a voucher of fuch contents of Mr. Frederick's, whereby he was damnified in the mutual accounts; and confequently his eftate leffened, to the amount of 4000l. The proof of the fact refted almoft entirely on the examination of Paul Jodderel, efq. the only furviving witness in the year 1726, many years after the imputed fpoliation. The jury, after a hearing of five hours, found a verdict for the defendant, without going out of court, and perfectly agreeable to his lordship's opinion.

This day the feffions ended 3d. at the Old Bailey; feventynine prisoners were tried this feffions; ten received fentence of death; two were caft for transportation for fourteen years, and thirty-two for feven years: one to be imprisoned fix months, and pay a fine of ten pounds, two whipped, and two branded.

Twenty-one refpited convicts in former feffions received his majesty's pardon on the following conditions: two to be tranfported for life, eleven for fourteen years, and eight for feven years.

At this feffions Thomas Mellor, otherwife Brookes, and John Litchfield, were capitally convicted, for affaulting and ravishing Mary War

net and Mary Curtain, in the fields near Hackney. Litchfield was recommended as an object of mercy.

By a letter from Africa, there is a most moving account of the mortality among our people in that country. The writer fays, that neither officer nor foldier in James Fort, on the river Gambia, have survived the black war with Barah, or the fickness which had raged like a plague in that fortification, owing to the ruinous ftate of the barracks, in which the foldiers, during the rainy feafon, were never dry Extract of a letter from Grenada, March 25.

"On the 17th ult. a French fmuggling fchooner from Martinico, commanded by capt. Leblanc, and mounting ten fwivel guns, with 18 men, was taken and brought into this port, by captain Campbell,in the custom-house schooner the Burke, of eight fwivels and twelve men, five of whom were negroes, after a defperate engagement, in which the French loft their captain,gunner, and one man, and had feveral wounded, one whereof is fince dead. Captain Campbell's mate and two of his men were wounded; the former died the Sunday following, but the other two it is expected will recover. The bravery and good conduct of captain Campbell, in this little though well-fought combat, as well as his great humanity to the vanquifhed, deferve the highest applaufe: and in juftice to Mr. Macdonald, who happened to be on board, we cannot omit mentioning, that he gallantly feconded the efforts of the captain and crew, and contributed in no small measure to the fuccefs of the day."

broke, alderman Beckford, and alderman Trecothick, with the two Theriffs, accompanied by Peter Roberts, efq. the city remembrancer, proceeded in ftate to St. James's, with the petition of the livery of London; where,after waiting a thort time in the antichamber, his lord fhip fent a meffenger to the lord in waiting, to acquaint him with his bufinefs, and to know the king's pleafure. After much interruption, his lordship was told, with fome marks of difrefpect, that the levee was begun, and the gentlemen might walk in. The king being near the door, the lord-mayor addreffed him to the following effect: “ Moft gracious fovereign, We, the lord-mayor, the reprefentatives in parliament, together with the fheriffs, of your majefty's ancient and loyal city of London, prefume to approach your royal perfon, and beg leave to prefent, with all humility, to your majefty, the dutiful and moft humble petition of your majefty's faithful and loyal fubjectsthe Livery of London in common-hall affembled, complaining of grievances; and from your majefty's unbounded goodness and paternal regard and affection foryourfubjects, they humbly prefume to hope, that your majefty will graciously condefcend to liften to their juft complaints, and to grant them fuch relief as in your majefty's known wifdom and justice shall feem meet." After which, his lordhip prefented the petition to his majety; but the king made no anfwer, and immediately turned about to baron Dieden, the Danish minifter, and delivered the petition to the lord in waiting.

The lord chancellor pronounced his decree on the will of the late Mr. VOL. XII.

William Hicks of Hamburgh; in confequence of which the Marine Society are entitled to a capital of near 10,000l. the intereft of which is annually to be applied for the benefit of the institution.

By letters from Jamaica, we hear that the inhabitants of St. Domingo, after having taken arins and beat the French king's troops, fent a memorial to the court of France, defcribing the neceffity they were under to fupport their rights, which had been cruelly invaded by the governor, and requesting the king to recal him and some other obnoxious perfons; declaring their refolution fooner to die, than longer fubmit to the arbitrary treatment they have lately met with.

Was tried before lord Mansfield, by a fpecial jury, a caufe, wherein John Milward, efq. was plaintiff, and capt. Harrison of the Three Sifters, a collier, defendant; for running down the plaintiff's veffel, with one hundred quarters of wheat, and drowning two men; the collier was going down full fail, on the flood tide, and anchor a cock bill : when, after a hearing of four hours, the jury brought in a verdict for the plaintiff, with two hundred and ninety-eight pounds damages, the value of the veffel and wheat.

A young man belonging to LongWitton, in Northumberland, was recommended to the infirmary at Newcastle afflicted with a moft violent convulfion in the diaphragm. His hiccup is faid to have been heard at two miles diftance; and the noife fo hideous, that cattle were frightened at him. This diiorder fucceeded a fever.

terbury being prefent. Very confiderable benefactions have been received towards furnishing and ornamenting it: and it is thought to be as handfome a ftru&ure as any in either university.

Leghorn, June 19. General Paoli, who arrived in this port on the 16th inftant, on board an English merchant fhip, came afhore yefterday. He went immediately to the houfe of fir John Dick, the English conful, who had invited him to lodge there. However, he ftaid but an hour, to take fome refreshment; after which he fet out, accompanied by the conful, in a coach and four, for Pifa, followed by another carriage, in which were lord Pembroke and baron Grottau. We know not to what country he will afterwards repair; perhaps to England, where, we are informed, fome of the principal nobility have offered him an honourable afylum.

10th.

The late proceedings of the livery at the commonhall, and a copy of the petition, were entered in the books of record, at the town-clerk's office.

About four oclock on Saturday afternoon, the adjournment of the feffions at Guildhall finally ended, when upwards of 150 fugitives and prifoners were difcharged from the feveral gaols in this city. The next feffion begins at Guildhall the 4th, and at the Old-Bailey the 6th of September.

Among the infolvent debtors difcharged at Guildhall on Friday laft, was Mr. Robert Cooper, who had been confined 27 years paft, on a fpecial capias utlagatum, for debt and costs amounting to upwards of 400l.

quering Corfica amounts to double what the island could have been fold for to any European purchaser. Yesterday evening, at fix o'clock, the ballot ended at the Eaft-India-houfe, on the following queftion, viz. "That this court do agree with the court of directors, that it is neceffary at this time to fend out a commiffion with extraordinary powers to regulate their affairs in India;" when fcrutineers were appointed, and at seven o'clock they made their report, viz. for the queftion 279; against it 259; majority 20. The court then proceeded upon other business.

Mr. Vanfittart, Mr. Scrafton, and colonel Ford, are the gentlemen appointed to go to the EastIndies on the above commiffion; and we hear that they will embark in about three weeks.

14th.

The marriage ceremony between the prince royal of Pruffia and the princefs Frederica Louifa of Heffe-Darmstadt, was performed in the palace of Charlottenbourg; after which, there was an affembly and fupper at court; and the rejoicings will be continued a week longer.

The number of negro flaves bartered for in one year (1768) on the coaft of Africa, from Cape Blanco to Rio Congo, by the different European nations, amounts as follows: Great-Britain, 53,100; British Americans, 6,300; France, 23,520; Holland, 11,300; Portugal, 1,700; Demark, 1,200; in all, 104,100, bought by barter for European and Indian manufactures, chiefly at 15l. fterling each, amounting in fterling money to 1,561,500l..
