OBSERVATIONS

ON

SOME OF THE PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA

OF

MALARIAL FEVER.

BY

JOSEPH JONES, A. M., M. D.,

PROFESSOR OF MEDICAL CHEMISTRY IN THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GEORGIA, AT AUGUSTA.

EXPLANATORY NOTE BY THE COMMITTEE OF PUBLICATION.

By reference to the minutes of the meeting at Louisville, it will be seen that this essay was originally referred to the Committee of Publication. By a subsequent action of the "ASSOCIATION" it was taken from that committee and referred to the Committee on Prize Essays, with instructions to report upon it as a competing prize essay, on or before the first of June. The latter committee were unable to report in season; and the Committee of Publication having received the paper, without authority to publish it as a prize essay, were compelled either to publish it as originally intended by the Association, or to withhold it altogether. The former course has been adopted, as being more nearly in compliance with the expressed wish of the Association.

INTRODUCTION.

THESE "Observations on some of the Phenomena of Malarial Fever," form the first of a series of observations which the author is conducting upon the fevers of the North American Continent.

The first three chapters are devoted to the consideration of the nature and extent of Pathological Investigations, and are intended as a general introduction to the whole series of investigations.

No one is more painfully alive to the imperfections of these incomplete observations than the author; and if they should result in inducing a single young man to enter this field, with correct views and the right spirit, he will feel that he has been rewarded for his labors.
