By

Motives to the Cultivation of Piety: or, Topics of Scriptural Encouragement for devout Travellers to Zion. James Young. 18mo., pp. viii, 156. B. L. Green.-Eight short Sermons, plain and pious, with a suitable piece of poetry attached to each.

The Unveiling of the Everlasting Gospel: with the Scripture Philosophy of Happiness, Holiness, and Spiritual Power, specially addressed to the Ministers and Church of God, at the present Crisis. 18mo., pp. 270. Hamiltons. We confess that we cannot exactly make out the author's views. Sometimes he writes as if he were approximating to evangelical Arminianism; and then he seems to hold a sort of universal pardon through Christ, We can have no objection to a man's struggling out of Calvinism, provided he struggle into what we believe to be truth. Faith for pardon, and a belief that in Christ we are pardoned, are very different things; and to this last the author seems to approach more nearly. Justice to our own readers compels us to say, that this is not one of the works likely to be instructive to them.

Discipline. By the Author of "Letters to my Unknown Friends." 18mo., pp. 98. Longmans.-Some good, useful observations on pride, vanity, discontent, selfishness, self-indulgence, and worldli

ness.

The principles are sound, and the remarks show much knowledge of human nature, and true Christianity.

Memoir of the Life and Correspondence of the Rev. William Lavers, late of Honiton, Devon. By John Sherman Elliott. Second Edition, revised. 12mo., pp. xii, 240. Sold by John Mason. An excellent stock-book of religious biography, which may be read to great advantage both by young Ministers, and youth in general.

The Youth of India speaking for themselves. Being the Substance of the Examination-Papers of the Students of the London Missionary Society's Christian Institution or College in Calcutta ;

with a few Introductory Remarks, by the Rev. T. Boaz, Pastor of Union College, Calcutta. 8vo., pp. xiv, 46. John Snow. An extremely interesting pamphlet. The answers to the questions may almost be termed wonderful, both for their correct English style, and their sound Christian sentiment; especially considering them as written by Hindoo youths, whose mother-tongue, and whose earliest notions, are so different from all that appears here. This is true Missionary encouragement. Work like this is sapping the very foundation of Oriental idolatry.

A Letter addressed to the Church; by a Member of the Church of England, on the Holy Mystery of the "First Resurrection," the Day of the Restoration of the Kingdom to Israel. 8vo., pp. 71. Hatchards.-The writer believes in the literal resurrection of certain of the pious dead, who shall then live, during the spiritual (not visibly personal) reign of Christ, for a thousand years. Certainly we have seen more objectionable forms of millenarianism; but we are not convinced that the author has disclosed the mystery. The volume consists of little more than the passages of Scripture, given in full, which are believed by the writer to settle the point. What he says himself, with reference to the texts, might have been printed, in a somewhat smaller type, and a closer page, in not more than a tenth part of the present volume.

An

The Flock and their Shepherds. Attempt to describe the Members, Pastors, Ordinances, and Missions of the Church of God. Dedicated to all who love Zion, and love Peace. 24mo., stiff covers. Partridge and Oakey. This little work contains judicious observations, written in a Christian spirit, and is throughout instructive and practical. Ireland. A Foem. By the Rev. James Martin. 18mo., stiff covers, pp. 36. W. Foster. The intention of these lines is good, and so, generally speaking, are the sentiments. But, however wishful to speak well of anything that aims

well for Ireland, of neither poetry nor verse can we honestly speak, without saying what we should not like to say. Poets as well as politicians find Ireland a difficult subject, however talented they may be; and they who are not so, had far better say nothing about it. It is not enough to be well-meaning.

The Course of Life: a Sketch for Christian Females. By F. M. S. Foolscap 8vo., pp. xii, 356. Seeleys. When we have mentioned the subjects of the volume, and say that they are well treated, with sound judgment and correct principles, and in a good style, we shall have shown our readers that this is a valuable work, and likely to benefit those for whom it is designed. Childhood; Youth; Personal Piety; Domestic Duties and Influences; Social Intercourse and general Benevolence; Combined and systematic Efforts of Beneficence; Trials and Afflictions; the Decline of Life. Young Christian females especially will find their advantage in reading it.

The Seventh Vial; being an Exposition of the Apocalypse, and in particular of the pouring out of the Seventh Vial, with special Reference to the present

Revolutions in Europe. 12mo., pp. 391. John Johnstone.-A volume based on sound evangelical principles, and written with much caution and judgment. Perhaps the full and exact meaning of this mysterious, but invaluable, portion of sacred Scripture will never be clearly opened but by the guidance of a completed fulfilment; but expositions of it like the present cannot fail to be serviceable to the pious and thoughtful reader. These are eventful times, and more than ordinary care is necessary to guard against plausible, but dangerous, errors; and such volumes as this is are well calculated to suggest caution, awaken thought, and direct practical attention to the evangelical administration of divine Providence. They are impressive calls to a personal, heart-and-life-pervading holiness, earnest intercession, and zealous labours, both for the counteraction of error and the spread of truth. We do not in every point agree with the author; but because we have ourselves been profited-very solemnly so-by the perusal, we recommend it to all who wish to mark the signs of the times" in the light of God's word.

RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE.

GREAT BRITAIN.

EXTRACT FROM THE MINUTES OF THE WESLEYAN CONFERENCE.

Q. WHAT Ministers have died since

the last Conference?

A. I. In Great Britain the seventeen following:

1. DAVID EVANS, 2d; who was born at Abercegir, in the Machynlleth Circuit, in the year 1816. When about sixteen years of age he was convinced of sin under the ministry of the word, and was led to seek salvation, which he obtained through faith in Jesus Christ. Soon after he had experienced a sense of pardoning mercy in his own heart, he felt a desire to call sinners to repentance, and became a Local Preacher, and laboured in that capacity for some time with diligence and usefulness. In the year 1835 he was proposed and accepted as a candidate for the Christian ministry; and after two years' residence in the Theological Institution at Hoxton, he commeneed his labours as a Wesleyan

Minister. He was a young man of genuine piety, good understanding, and inflexible fidelity. As a Minister of the Gospel, he was never light and trifling, but always maintained the gravity becoming the sacred office. He was a diligent student of the holy Scriptures; and all his sermons evinced an extensive acquaintance with the principles of saving truth. During the last two years of his life he was the Editor of the "Welsh Wesleyan Magazine," and discharged the duties of the office to the satisfaction of his brethren. For many months prior to his death he was the subject of severe suffering, but uniformly maintained a firm reliance upon the great atonement, and evinced a patient submission to the divine will. In his last hours he often repeated those words of the Apostle, "I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with
