At a General Assembly of the state of Illinois, begun and held in the city of Springfield, on Monday, January 5th, in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven, being the first session of the twentieth General Assembly. The Hon. GUSTAVUS KOERNER, lieutenant governor of the state of Illinois, and speaker of the Senate, appeared, took the chair, and called the Senate to order. On motion of Mr. Gillespie, George T. Brown was appointed secretary of the Senate pro tem. Robert McCandless was appointed sergeant-at-arms pro tem. On motion of Mr. Henderson, M. S. Dunning was appointed assistant sergeant-at-arms pro tem. A call of the Senate having been ordered, the following senators appeared and took their seats: From the counties of Lake and McHenry-GEORGE Gage. From the counties of Stephenson and Jo Daviess-JOHN H. ADAMS. AMS. From the counties of Peoria, Marshall, Putnam and Woodford-J. D. Ar NOLD. From the counties of Madison, Bond and Montgomery-Jos PH GILLESPIE. From the counties of Boone, Winnebago, Ogle and Carroll-WAITE TAL COTT. From the counties of Vermilion, Coles, Cumberland and Edgar-WILLIAM D. WATSON. The following named gentlemen also appeared, presented certificates of their election in the present General Assembly, and the oath of office being duly administered by Judge Edwin Beecher, of the 12th circuit, they took their seats, viz: From Cook county-N.
