CHAPTER LXXXI.

An Act for the ralief of the Supreme Court Reporter.

SECTION 1. Appropriation for extra services to the Reporter of the Supreme Court.
2. When act to take effect.

Beit enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota :

SECTION 1. That there be and is hereby appropriated out of any moneys in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of one thousand dollars to Iarvey Officer, the reporter for the Supreme Court, for extra services performed by him in the publication of the Supreme Court Reports, during the years 1860, 1861, 1862 and 1863.

SEC. 2. This act shall take effect from and after its passage.

CHAPTER LXXXII.

An Act for the relief of the town of Norway, in
Fillmore County.

SECTION 1. May levy a special tax-in what sum-for what purpose.

2. When act to take effect.

Beit enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota :

SECTION 1. That the legal voters of the town of

Norway, in Fillmore county, may, at their next annual May levy a special town meeting, have power to vote to raise such sum of money, not exceeding five hundred dollars, as they may deem necessary to pay the necessary town charges for the year 1864, and to liquidate the present indebtedness of said town. Such tax shall be levied and collected as other taxes for town purposes are levied and collected.

SEC. 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER LXXXIII.

An Act for the relief of Henry J. Brainard, so as to authorize the erection of a dam at or near the outlet of Vatnei's Lake.

SECTION 1. Authorized to erect a dam at the outlet of Vatnei's Lake-for what purpose. 2. When act to take effect.

Beit enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota :

SECTION 1. That Henry J. Brainard, his heirs and assigns, be and they are hereby authorized and empowered to erect a dam at or near the outlet of Vatnei's Lake, on sections thirty-one and thirty-two, in town- Authorized to ship thirty, north of range twenty-two west, in the what purpose county of Ramsey, by which he or they may, for the purpose of obtaining a sufficient head of water to run his mill, situated on Phalan's Creek, in said county, raise the water at said dam, not to exceed four feet above the ordinary level. Provided, however, That the erection of said dam, and the raising or backing

up of the water, occasioned thereby, shall not interfere with private rights.

SEC. 2. This act shall be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER LXXXIV.

An Act for the relief of Nathan Lamson.

SECTION 1. Appropriation for the relief of Nathan Lamson.

2. When act to take effect.

WHEREAS, Nathan Lamson did, on the third day of July, 1863, kill Little Crow, the leader of the Indian massacre in 1862, thereby rendering great service to the State; therefore,

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota :

SECTION 1. That there be and hereby is appropriated, out of any money in the treasury, not otherwise for what purpose appropriated, the sum of five hundred dollars, to be paid as follows, to-wit:

The sum of five hundred dollars shall be paid to said Nathan Lamson.

SEC. 2. This act shall be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER LXXXV.

An Act to amend an act to incorporate the Pittsburg and Minnesota Mining Company, approved March third, eighteen hundred and fifty-five.

SECTION 1. Incorporators of said company-powers of said Company. 2. When act to take effect.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota :

SECTION 1. That section one of an act to incorporate the Pittsburg and Minnesota Mining Company, be and the same is hereby amended, so as to read as follows:

Section 1. That R. C. Corbett, Henry McKenty and W. A. Corbett, their assigns, successors and associates, shall be and are hereby constituted and made a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of the Pittsburg and Minnesota Mining Company, and by said companythat name shall be capable, in law, of suing and being sued, pleading and being impleaded, answering and being answered unto, defending and being defended in all courts and places whatsoever; may have a common seal and alter the same at pleasure, and by said name shall be capable of purchasing, holding and conveying any estate or property, real or personal, for the use and benefit of said corporation; said corporators may elect in such manner as they may determine, all necessary officers, fix their compensation, and define their duties, ordain and establish by-laws for the proper government and regulation of the officers of said company, and alter and repeal the same, and employ all such agents, mechanics and laborers as they shall think proper.

SEC. 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER LXXXVI.

An Act to amend an act entitled "an act to incorporate the Baldwin School in the City of Saint Paul, approved February twenty-sixth, eighteen hundred and fifty-three," and also to authorize the Board of Trustees of the College of St. Paul to transfer and convey its property and franchises to the same.

SECTION 1. Name and style of said corporation-Board of Trustees.

2. The object of said institution.

3. Power of Board of Trustees.

4. Duty of President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the College of Saint Paul.

5. May establish an Academic Department-when President of the University may be appointed.

6. When act to take effect.

Beit enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota:

SECTION 1.

That the word "school," whenever the same appears in said act, is changed to "university," Name and style of and the said institution shall hereafter be known by said corporation the name of the "Baldwin University," and the following-named persons, being the present trustees of the Baldwin School, viz.: Alexander Ramsey, Edward D. Neill, Henry F. Masterson, Henry L. Moss, John Mattocks, and also Henry J. Horn, D. W. Ingersoll, Henry M. Knox and Frederick A. Noble, and their successors in office, shall be known as the "Trustees of the Baldwin University," which shall be the name and style of said corporation, and shall succeed to all the rights, powers and liabilities specified in the act to which this is an amendment.

SEC. 2. Section two of said act is amended, so as to read as follows :

Section 2. The object of the institution shall be to afford instruction in English literature, in ancient and modern languages, in moral and mental philosophy, in history and political economy, in mathematics and the natural sciences, and in the application of science to arts, agriculture and the professions.
