"I am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep."-John x. II.

E

VEN in England, where the soil is rich and the fields are enclosed, a shepherd's work is not easy. But in the East it is far more difficult and dangerous. He must often lead his flock for hundreds of miles in search of food and water. When they stray he must seek them for days together before he can find them. Wild beasts-lions, and bears, and wolves-will attack the flock, that they may devour and scatter them. The shepherd must protect them at the risk of his own life. David when keeping sheep at Bethlehem had to fight both a lion and a bear.
