made at least the qualifying scores of first-class marksmen the current target year.

The competition will comprise firing at two hundred and five hundred yards. Seven shots at each range without sighting shots. Minimum trigger pull six pounds, to be tested before or during the competition.

All competitors (except distinguished marksmen) will compete for individual trophies. Medals will be awarded:

For the three highest aggregate scores, by sharpshooters of record.
For the three highest aggregate scores, by first-class marksmen.

Scores of competitors shooting on the teams will count for individual trophy.

Competitors making the twelve highest aggregate scores, officers or men, will be mentioned in orders.

The tri-color will be the regimental trophy won by the winning

team.

III. The distinguished marksmen competition will be held Wednesday, September 7, at 9 A.M.

Colonel Bancroft, Fifth Regiment, Colonel Mathews, First Regiment, and Lieutenant Colonel Edmands, First Corps Cadets, will each detail one commissioned officer and three non-commissioned officers to report to Colonel Chase for such duty as may be assigned them.

Competitors will notify the Inspector General of Rifle Practice of their intention to compete not later than September 3.

The competition will comprise judging distances while skirmishing, and firing at two hundred, five hundred and six hundred yards. Seven rounds per man at all distances.

One sighting shot allowed at the five hundred and six hundred yard range.

Minimum trigger pull six pounds, to be tested before or during the competition.

The three highest competitors will be recognized by medals.

IV. The Steward Prize, won at Wimbledon by Corporal W. D. Huddleson, First Regiment Infantry, presented to the State by the Inspector General, will bear on a plate the annual record of the team winning the tri-color, and the names of officers or men making the five highest scores in the distinguished marksmen competition.

V. Brigade commanders are charged with the promulgation of this order.

I. Annual drills required by law will take place as follows: Second Regiment of Infantry at Springfield, October 4; Fifth Regiment of Infantry at Woburn, October 7; Sixth Regiment of Infantry at Wakefield, October 5; Ninth Regiment of Infantry at Boston, October 13*; First Battalion Cavalry at Boston, October 6; Second Corps Cadets at Salem, September 29; Naval Battalion at Boston, September 10; Battery A, Light Artillery, Second Brigade, at Boston, October 3; Battery B, First Battalion Light Artillery, at Worcester, September 21; Battery C, First Battalion Light Artillery, at Lawrence, September 10; Troop F, Cavalry, First Brigade, at Carlisle, October 4; Signal Corps, Second Brigade, at Boston, September 28; Ambulance Corps, First Brigade, at Boston, September 28; Ambulance Corps, Second Brigade, at Boston, September 28.

II. Commanding officers of regiments, battalions and unattached companies will order their commands to assemble at 10 o'clock A.м. at the places and on the dates designated in pararaph I.

They will designate uniform to be worn, but all ceremonies will be performed in full dress. Heavy marching order is optional with commanding officers.

If commanding officers desire, assembly may be ordered at the same hour outside of the city or town limits designated.

The day will be devoted to extended order drill and street firing. III. Commanding officer of First Brigade will detail a mustering officer for F Cavalry and Ambulance Corps. Commanding

officer of Second Brigade will detail a mustering officer for Battery A and for Ambulance and Signal Corps. Commanding officer of First Battalion Light Artillery will detail mustering officer for batteries B and C.

The surgeon general will arrange the drill of the Ambulance Corps with the corps commanders, and will order such medical equipment, including the ambulance, to report to the senior corps commander on the date of the drill.

The surgeon general will detail a medical officer to report upon the efficiency of the Ambulance Corps so far as medical work is concerned.

IV. All mustering officers will forward with rolls a letter giving the route travelled by each command, and "list of absentees" and pay rolls will not be received without them; and no officer or man will be mustered for pay who does not perform the full day's duty. Mileage will be allowed by shortest and most direct route to destination and return to stations.

V. Infantry regiments will be allowed 7,000 rounds of blank ammunition, which will be forwarded on receipt of requisition from each regimental headquarters.

VI. All commanding officers will at once on completion of tour of duty forward a full report of same to State headquarters.

VII. Officers responsible for State property will take every precaution for safety of same. The losses in transportation are needless and will not be allowed.

VIII. Brigade commanders are charged with the promulgation of this order.

Upon the report and recommendations of the Inspector General and the Adjutant General, the following-mentioned petitions for companies to be attached to the naval militia of the Commonwealth are hereby

approved, and the same will be mustered into the military service of the State, viz.:

That of William B. Edgar and others of Fall River, Mass.

That of Joseph Mitchell and others of Lynn, Mass.

The Adjutant General will issue the necessary orders.

II. Col. William L. Chase, Acting Inspector General, will detail officers of his department to muster in the companies at Fall River and Lynn on the evening of Sept. 30, 1892. Surgeon Chas. W. Galloupe, Eighth Regiment Infantry, is detailed as medical officer for the examination of recruits at Lynn for the naval company. Assistant Surgeon Howard S. Dearing, First Regiment Infantry, is detailed as medical officer to examine recruits at Fall River for the naval company.

GENERAL ORDERS, No. 16.

I. Upon recommendation of the surgeon general it is hereby ordered that at all meetings of the medical board of examiners for the examination of veterinary surgeons commissioned in the State military service, Lieut. Austin Peters, veterinary surgeon First Battalion Cavalry, be detailed to advise the board in such examinations.

II. It is further ordered, on the recommendation of the surgeon general, that on all tours of duty or drills by the State troops, by land or water, a medical officer shall be present on duty with such troops.

III. Permission is hereby granted all regular troops of the several States to pass through the Commonwealth, armed and equipped, going to and returning from Chicago, Ill., for the purpose of attending the dedicatory ceremonies of the World's Columbian Exposition, to be held in said city during the month of October, 1892, and the Exposition in 1893.
