An ACT to erect Part of this State into a County, by the Name of the County of St. Lawrence.

I.

Paffed March 3d, 1802.

E it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That all that tract of land, be- 1 ginning in the line in the river St. Lawrence which divides the United States from the dominions of the king of Great-Britain, where the fame is interfected by a continuation of the divifion line of great lots number three and four of Macomb's purchase; thence running foutheafterly along the faid line until it comes oppofite to the wefterly corner of the township of Cambray ; then in a ftraight line to the faid corner of Cambray; then along the rear lines of the faid township of Cambray and the townships of D'Kalb, Canton, Potfdam and Stockholm, diftinguished on a

map of the faid townfhip and fil the furveyor-general; then by a courfe from the line of the faid fame interfeets the divifion line two in Macomb's purchafe; the the lands referved by the St. Reg the bounds thereof to the domin tain; thence along the fame to and hereby is erected into a fep and known by the name of St. La II. IV. And be it further enacted for the faid county of St. Law and general feffions of the pe terms of the fame courts in e 8 as follows, that is to fay: The begin on the firft Tuefday of J tinue to be held until the Satu fecond term of the faid court 1 of November in every year, a the Saturday following, inclufi mon pleas and general feffions jurifdiction, powers and autho courts of common pleas and the other counties of this ftate Provided always, That nothing ftrued to affect any fuit or ac fhall be commenced before the

to work a wrong or prejudice to any of the parties therein, or to affect any criminal or other proceedings on the part of the people of this ftate, but all fuch civil and criminal proceedings fhall and may be profecuted to trial, judgment and execution as if this act had never been paffed..

V. And be it further enacted, That until legislative provifion 9 be made in the premises, the faid courts of common pleas and general feffions of the peace fhall be held in the old barracks, fo called in the said town of Ofwegatchie, which fhall be deemed in law the court house and gaol of the faid county of St. Lawrence. VI. And be it further enacted, That the freeholders and inhabi- 10 tants of the faid county, fhall have and enjoy within the fame, all and every the faid rights, powers and privileges, as the freeholders and inhabitants of any other county in this ftate are by law entitled to have and enjoy.

VII. And be it further enacted, That it fhall not be the duty of 11 the juftices of the fupreme court to hold a circuit court in every year in the faid county, unless in their judgment they fhall deem it proper and neceffary, any law to the contrary notwithstanding. VIII. And be it further enacted, That the faid county of St. Lawrence fhall be confidered as part of the western. diftrict of this state.

IX. And be it further enasted, That all the refidue of the tract of land lying between the divifion lines aforefaid of great lots number three and four, and of great lots number one and two, in Macomb's purchase and the north bounds of Totton and Crosfield's purchafe, fhall until further legiflative provision in the premises, be confidered as part of the town of Maffena, in the faid county of St. Lawrence: And all that part of Macomb's purchase, included in great divifion number one, and the In- 14 dian refervation at the St. Regis village, fhall be annexed to and form part of the town of Chateaugay, in the county of Clinton.

X.. And be it further enacted, That the faid county of St. Law. rence fhall be annexed to and become part of the diftri& now compofed of the counties of Herkimer, Otfego, Oneida and Chenango, as it refpects all proceedings under the act entitled "An act relative to district attornies."

XI. And be it further enacted, That until other provifion be made by law, the infpectors of election in the feveral towns in 16the faid county of St. Lawrence, fhalf return the votes taken at any election for governor, lieutenant-governor, fenators, members of affembly and members of congrefs, to the clerk of the county of Oneida, to be by him eftimated as a part of the aggregate number of votes given at fuch election in the county of Oneida,
