"yeoman" sold for £50, to John Thurber, Jr., ten acres of land in Rehoboth. The same day, he bought for £90, of John Bowen, Jr., thirty-eight and one-half acres there. January 1, 1761, Dan and his wife sold to Amos Allen, housewright, of Providence, R. I., eighteen acres of land in Rehoboth for £40, 10s. November 10, 1766, he was again chosen Petit Juryman. August 18, 1769 he bought of Silvanus Martin, ten acres of land in Rehoboth, for £6, 12s.

The will of Dan Chaffe, dated December 10, 1790, leaves to his three sons, William, Jonathan and Braddock, all his lands, buildings, etc. Also to "Rachel Chaffee, widow of my son Robinson deceased" beside other bequests, 5s., "to be paid by my three sons," who were also to pay £9 to Sylvester, son of Robinson, when he reached the age of twenty-one. The son Jonathan was made executor of the will, which was probated November 1, 1796.

44 Ephraim Chaffe (Jonathan,3 Nathaniel, Thomas 1) was born in Rehoboth, Mass., January 25, 1715-16, and died there, June 9, 1790. He married (1) December 15, 1742, Patience, daughter of Samuel and Patience Butterworth of Rehoboth. She died May 16, 1743, aged twenty years, and he married (2) in Rehoboth, June 2, 1750, her sister Hannah Butterworth, who died September 5, 1807, aged seventy-eight. The ancestor of Patience and Hannah, Deacon John Butterworth, was expelled from Rehoboth in the early days of that town because of his Baptist proclivities. In his house was held the first Baptist service held in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He owned all that part of Rehoboth, known as Chestnut Hill, later called Seekonk.

Ephraim Chaffe was a farmer in Rehoboth. He is designated in the records as “yeoman" and "husbandman." He was admitted to membership in the First Congregational Church of Rehoboth, June 13, 1736. March 21, 1742-3, he was appointed guardian of his wife, Patience, her father having recently died and she being a minor. The bond for £400, for the faithful performance of his duties was signed by Ephraim, Jonathan (8) and Nathaniel Chaffe (39), and witnessed by Stephen Paine and Josiah Howland. December 5, 1747, he was chosen by his cousin, Shubael Chaffe (74), as his guardian, and April 4, 1751, he sold to him for £26, 13s. 4d., five parcels of land in Rehoboth, containing twenty acres. October 28, 1731, he and his wife Hannah sold to Daniel Bliss of Rehoboth, for £150,

Deacon John Butterworth was the owner, in 1660, of the land upon which this house stands. Ephraim Chaffe married, first, (1742) Patience and, second, her sister Hannah Butterworth, descendants of Deacon Butterworth. The property has continued in lineal descent to Frederick E. Chaffee, who now (1909) owns and occupies it. Mr. S. R. Chaffee, artist, of Providence, R. I., was born here, and from a water color made by him this picture was reproduced.

Ephraim Chaffe was chosen for his first town office, that of Constable, March 25, 1754. He was chosen for the same office, March 29, 1756, and March 28, 1757. January 18, 1762, he bought of Edward Carpenter of Rehoboth, four acres of land there, for £9. August 3, 1762, his nephew, Noah Chaffe (148), chose him to be his guardian. May 4, 1765, Ephraim and his wife sold for £200, forty-four acres on Chestnut Hill in Rehoboth, to "Patience Butterworth, our mother, widow of Samuel Butterworth, of Rehoboth." December 15, 1766, Ephraim and his sons, Samuel B. and Ephraim, Jr., bought of Joseph Wheaton of New Milford, Conn., for £36, 15s., twelve acres of land in Rehoboth near Chestnut Hill. March 27, 1769, he was chosen Surveyor of Highways. March 29, 1770, he bought of Edward Martin, Jr., six and one-fourth acres of land with buildings, on the east side of Chestnut Hill, for £33. April 3, 1771, he bought four and one-half acres more on Chestnut Hill, from Ezekiel Carpenter for £21. June 7, 1773, he bought for £30, 1s., from Rachel Goff of Johnston, R. I., seven and three-fourths acres of land in Rehoboth. This ends his recorded purchases of land. March 24, 1778, he sold to "Salvanus" Martin, for £135, ten acres of wood and pasture land on the easterly side of Chestnut Hill. May 21, 1781, he sold six acres for £54. Four days later, May 25th he made his will, which was probated September 6, 1790. The legatees were his wife, Hannah (Butterworth) Chaffe, who was made executrix and received the largest part of the estate, and his children, Patience, wife of Samuel Bowen, Samuel Butterworth Chaffe, Ephraim, Jr., Hannah, Sarah and Rachel, who received twenty shillings each. The document was witnessed by Barzilla and Lydia Bowen and Jesse Perrin.

50 David Chaffe, Jr. (David,3 Nathaniel,2 Thomas 1) was born in Rehoboth, Mass., February 27, 1708-9, and died in Westford, Ashford Township, Conn., February 19, 1784. He married in Rehoboth, April 4, 1733-4, Martha, daughter of Ebenezer Walker of that place. She was born July 20, 1714, and died in Westford, September 20, 1820.

David Chafee, Jr., was baptized and admitted to membership in the First Congregational Church in Rehoboth, September 3, 1732, and May 2, 1736, his wife also joined the church. They lived in Attleboro, Mass., where their first six children were born. January 5, 1736, "David Chaffe, yeoman" and wife Martha of Attleboro, for £85, sold to Ebenezer Walker, blacksmith, "Our brother" sixteen acres of land in Rehoboth, being the said Martha's share in the estate of her father, Ebenezer Walker. November 21, 1736, they sold to Jonathan Robinson, for £14, one acre of salt marsh in Barrington, Mass., being "ye part of ye meadow of our father Ebenezer Walker." December 28, 1747, "David Chaffe, husbandman, of Attleborough" sold to Alexander More of that place for £640, old tenor bills,

sixty acres of land in "the township of Attleborough." In 1748 he was still living in Attleboro, when he bought of Joseph Byles one hundred acres of land in Ashford. Between this date and the winter of 1749-50, he moved there with his family, and in 1750 received from his father "for love good will and fatherly affection" thirty acres more there. He was elected Lister in 1763, and also twice in 1764. January 8, 1769, David Chafee and his wife were dismissed to the Second Church in Ashford, in which town he was buried.

His will made in 1783 was probated the following year:

WILL OF DAVID CHAFEE

"In the name of God, amen.

"The 19th Day of May, in the year of our Lord Anno Dom. 1783.

"I David Chafee of Ashford in the county of Windham, and State of Connecticut in Newengland, being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory thanks be given to God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will & Tesstament, that is to say, Principally and first of All,

"I give and reccomend my Soul into the hand of God who gave it, and for my Body I reccomend it to the earth to be buried in Christian-like & decent Manner at the discresion of my executor to be hereafter named, nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God.

"And as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give devise & dispose of the same in manner and form following, that is to say-I give and bequeath to my well-beloved wife Martha Chafee, the use and improvement of all the lands that I have not disposed of by deed, together with the use and improvement of forty-three acres of land I have this day conveyed by deed of bargain and sale to my Son David Chafee Junr which land is leased to me the said David Chafee, by the said David Chafee Junr during my natural life, and the natural life of the said Martha. I also give to my said wife Martha Chafee, the use and improvement of my dwelling house and all my household furniture, together with the lands above mentioned during the natural life of the said Martha. I also give to my said wife Martha the use and improvement of one cow and a suitable horse to ride when and so often as she the said Martha shall want or require the same to be furnished by my said Executor.

"Item I give and bequeath to my beloved Son David Chafee Jun all the lands I shall die seized, of and buildings thereon standing, to him his heirs and assigns after the deed of my said wife Martha.

"Item I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter Martha Tyler twentyfour Shillings Silver Money, to be paid to the said Martha, within one year after my dece by my Executor.

"Item I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter Patience Amidon twenty shillings Silver Money, to be paid to the said Patience, within one year after my decee by my Executor.

"Item I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter Joanna Whiton twelve shillings Silver Money, to be paid to the said Joanna within one year after my decee by my Executor.

"Item I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter Elizabeth Brown twelve Shillings Silver Money, to be paid to the said Elizabeth within one year after my dece by my Executor.

"Item I give and bequeath to my well-beloved daughter Dorathy Knox twelve Shillings Silver Money, to be paid to the said Dorathy within one year after my decee by my Executor.
