CITY OF BOSTON.

In Committee, January 23, 1855.

TO THE CITY COUNCIL:

The Committee on Public Buildings respectfully represent to the City Council, that the appropriation placed at their disposal at the commencement of the present financial year, viz: $7,500, is nearly exhausted; and that an addition to the same will be needed to meet the bills becoming due the next month, and other claims likely to arise before the close of the present financial year.

The present deficit is caused by the expenses of fitting up the various Station Houses for the accommodation of the Police Officers, under the new arrangement of that branch of the public service. The amount expended for this object has been over $3,200. As these expenditures were not anticipated when the original appropriation was made, they were not provided for.

In the opinion of this Committee, an addition of about $3,000 will be required to carry us through this financial year, which closes with the 30th of April next,
