Thrs refers to the introduction written by Mr. Wilkes, to Lord Weymouth's letter, and inferted in the St. James's Chronicle, for which fee in the following number. His lordship con

fidered the affront as offered to himself, and declared in the Houfe of Lords, that he was the perfon aimed at in the introduction, though his name was omitted at the bottom of the letter. Accordingly the printer of the St. James's Chronicle was fent for to the Houfe; but happening that evening to be at the play, he could not attend till the next morning. When he appeared, the chancellor told him, that if he expected any lenity from that honourable House, he must directly acquaint their Lordships who was the author of that introduction., M. Baldwin was not wanting in refpect to fo honourable an affembly; for as if he had privately

He not only produced the copy of the letter and introduction in queftion; but he likes wife begged their Lordships acceptance of a pacquet, containing copies of feveral effays, with which Mr. Wilkes had formerly favoured him, and thus Thewed his gratitude to a gentleman, by whole correfpondence and that of his friends, Mr Baldwin's paper was first brought into any degree of credit. But to proceed their lordships refolved, that the introduction was an infolent, fcandalous, and feditious libel, tending to inflame and ftir up the minds of his Majefty's fubjects to fedition, and to a total fubverfion of all good order and legal government. This refolution was immediately followed by a fimilar one from the House of Commons,

mons, and was made a pretence for the expulfion of Mr. Wilkes from that house on the fecond day of February laft. The Freeholders of Middlefex furely ought to thank Mr. Baldwin for his steady attachment to the intereft of his benefactor, and for the noble and undaunted stand he made in fupport of the liberty of the prefs,

S the expulfion and incapacitating of Mr. Wilkes, has altogether been the ground and chief article of all the Petitions and Remonftrances that have been presented to his Majefty; the following Letter, upon the reception of the City Remonftrance, will not we hope be esteemed impertinent, in a work of this kind, as it fully illuftrates the rights of the Subject to PETITION and to REDRESS.
