COUNTY INSTITUTIONS.

Hamilton county has no almshouse, but furnishes some temporary (outdoor) relief. The expense of such relief, administered by the superintendents anl overseers of the poor for the year ending September 30, 1903, was $2,645.85, and the number thus temporarily relieved was 27.

HERKIMER COUNTY ALMSHOUSE, Middleville, N. Y. Inspected by Inspector Dorr March 7, 1903; by Inspector Rogers July 16, 1903.

Attached to the almshouse are 65 acres of land, all of which are reported to be under cultivation; estimated value of land and buildings, $30,000; estimated value of the products of the farm during the year, $800; receipts from sales, $450.95.

Expenses in connection with the almshouse for the year ending September 30, 1903, $11,367.37; estimated weekly expense per person, $2.33; expense of temporary (outdoor) relief administered by the overseers of the poor, exclusive of 12 towns from which no report was received, $7,713.47; expense of support, in whole or in part, in institutions other than the almshouse, $831.50; aggregate expenditures for support and relief, $19,912.34.

Total number in the almshouse during the year, 268; remaining October 1, 1903, 78 (52 males and 26 females), including 19 feeble-minded or idiotic, 4 blind, 1 deaf and 1 epileptic; number of wayfarers to whom meals were furnished at the almshouse, 123; number receiving temporary (outdoor) relief, 1,360; number supported in other institutions, 13; total supported and relieved during the year, 1,764.
