Object.-A general hospital for those needing surgical or medical care.

Number of patients cared for during the year, 551 (351 paying patients and 200 beneficiaries, of whom 87 were supported by public funds and 113 by private funds); number remaining in the hospital October 1, 1903, 27 (10 males and 17 females).

Receipts for the year ending September 30, 1903, including balance on hand ($1,277.53), $25,314.72; expenditures, $20,676.46; balance on hand October 1, 1903, $1,638.26.

Terms and qualifications for admittance.-All who are financially able pay for board and treatment; free to the destitute; accident cases admitted at once, all others received on certificate signed by physician in charge.

COUNTY INSTITUTIONS.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY ALMSHOUSE, Dewittville, N. Y. Inspected by Inspector Dorr June 17 and 18, 1903. Keeper.-Mervin E. Smith, appointed January 1, 1893. Attached to the almshouse are 4383 acres of land, 200 of which are reported to be under cultivation; value of land and buildings, $122,540; estimated value of the labor of inmates during the year, $350; estimated value of products of the farm, $3,546.49; receipts from sales, $2,249.38.

Expenses in connection with the almshouse for the year ending September 30, 1903, $15,451.02; estimated weekly expense per person, $1.72; expense of temporary (outdoor) relief administered by the superintendent and overseers of the poor, $11,818.79; expense of support in whole or in part in institutions : other than the almshouse, $10,179.01; aggregate expenditures for support and relief, $37.448.82.

Total number in the almshouse during the year, 213; remaining October 1, 1903, 126 (86 males and 40 females), including 12 feeble-minded or idiotic, 1 deaf, 5 blind persons and 3 epileptics; number of wayfarers to whom meals were furnished at the almshouse, 5; receiving temporary (outdoor) relief, 1,114; number supported in other institutions, 236; total supported and relieved during the year, 1,568.
