TO THE PUBLIC.
M IME produces wonderful changes! The original edition of
I this work was prepared and presented to the public many years ago, and was received with great favor, attaining a larger sale, it is believed, than any work published within its time. From its intrinsic merit it became, as it were, a necessity, as an indispensable Household and Office Companion.
Lapse of time and eventful circumstances have wrought such material changes in our general government and in the statutes of the various States, in connection with all the business and social relations of life, that to meet the exigencies of the times, a new book is demanded to take the place of the old. Yet in this new production, not only all the features which have made the work so immensely popular have been preserved ; but many important additions have been introduced. This new production has been perfected regardless of labor or outlay. So thorough and critical bas been the revision and completion, that the most implicit reliance can be placed upon the work as authority on all the subjects of which it treats.
The utility of such a work no one will now question. The sale of hundreds of thousands of copies of the former editions, and the constant demand for it, have settled that point. Th9 professional man, the farmer, the mechanic, the manufacturer, the soldier, the sailor, each requires a convenient, comprehensive and reliable work which will enable him to draw up any instrument in writing that may be required, in a legal form ; which will furnish such legal information as is usually called for in the various avocations of life; a book that everybody can understand, and that will enable every man or woman to be HIS OR HER OWN LAWYER. To make such a work, and to make it well, was no small task; but by patient, continued, and intelligent labor, it has been achieved.
