XIX. And whereas the feveral powers granted by the laws now in being, relating to the militia forces within that part of Great Britain called England, for punishing ferjeants, drummers, and fifers, for misbehaviour, difobedience of orders, or neglect of duty, during the time the militia to which they belong is not in actual fervice, or is not called out to annual exercife, have been found defective and infufficient; be it therefore enacted by the authority aforesaid, That if any ferjeant major, ferjeant, drum major, drummer, or fifer, engaged to ferve in any regiment, battalion, or independant company of militia, within that part of Great Britain called England, and who fhall have received pay therein at any time from and after the paffing of this act, during his engagement to serve in any such regiment, battalion, or independant company, and during the time the militia, to which he fhall belong, is not in actual fervice, or out at annual exercise, fhall misbehave, be negligent in his duty, or be difobedient to the orders of the adneglect off. jutant, or other his fuperior officer, and be thereof convicted duty, or difobedience of upon the oath of the adjutant, or other his fuperior officer, or orders, when other credible witnefs, before a juftice of the peace for the the regiment, county, riding, or place, to the militia whereof such serjeant

XXIV. And, for the better encouragement of any person to apprehend and fecure fuch deferters as aforefaid, be it further enacted, That the juftice of the peace before whom any fuch deferter fhall be committed, shall and may iffue his warrant in writing to the clerk of the regiment, battalion, or independant company, to which fuch deferter fhall belong, directing and requiring fuch clerk to pay out of the stock belonging to such regiment, battalion, or independant company, into the hands of such person who fhall apprehend any fuch deferter, the fum of twenty fhillings for every deferter that fhall be fo apprehended and committed.

XXV. Provided always, That if any perfon fhall harbour, conceal, or affift, any fuch deferter, knowing him to be fo, the deferters is person so offending fhall forfeit, for every fuch offence, the fum

CAP. XVIII.

An act to enable the trustees of the British museum to exchange, fell, or difpofe of, any duplicates of printed books, medals, coins, or other curiofities; and for laying out the money arifing by fuch fale in the purchase of other things that may be wanting in, or proper for, the said museum. WH

HEREAS by an act of parliament paffed in the twenty fixth Preamble. year of the reign of his late majefty King George the fecond, intituled, An act for the purchase of the museum, or collection of fir Hans Sloane, and of the Harleian collection of manufcripts; and for better providing one general repofitory for the better reception, and more convenient use, of the said collection, and of the Cottonian library, and of the additions thereto; it is, amongst other things, enacted, that within the cities of London or Westminfter, or the fuburbs thereof, one general repofitory fhould be erected or provided in fuch convenient place, and in fuch manner, as the truflees thereby appointed, or the major part of them, at a general meeting affembled, fhould direct, for the reception not only of the faid museum, or collection of fir Hans Sloane, but also of the Cottonian library, and of the additions which had been or fhould be made thereto, by virtue of the last will and teftament of Arthur Edwards efquire in the faid act named, and likewife of the faid Harleian collection of manufcripts, and of fuch other additions to the faid Cottonian library as, with the approbation of the trustees by the faid act appointed, or the major part of them, at a general meeting affembled, fhould be made thereunto, in manner therein after mentioned; and of fuch other collections and libraries as, with the like approbation, should be admitted into the faid general repository; and that the faid feveral collections, additions, and library, fo received into the faid general repofitory, should remain and be preferved therein, for publick ufe, to all pofterity: and whereas the faid collections have been greatly increafed by confiderable donations from his Majefty, and the gifts of feveral noblemen and others; and it is probable that great additions will hereafter be made thereto : and whereas there are now, and there may hereafter be, in the various departments of the British museum, many duplicates of printed books, medals, coins, and other curiofities, which it would be proper to difpofe of, in order to make room for others: may it therefore please your moft excellent Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by the King's most excellent majesty, by and with the advice and confent of the lords fpiritual and temporal, and commons, in this prefent parliament affembled, and by the authority of the fame, That it fhall and may be lawful to and for the faid truf- Five or more fees, and their fucceffors, or any five or more of them, at any truffees are
