X. XIV. And whereas it often disturbs the peace of domeftic life, checks marriage, and difcourages industry, to place out parish boys to the age of twenty four years; therefore, in order to remedy the fame, be it enacted by the authority aforefaid, That it shall and may be lawful to place or bind out boys as well as girls apprentices, by the respective parish officers for the time being, and alfo by the governors and guardians of the hofpital for the maintenance and education of expofed and deferted young children, for the term of seven years, or till they fhall attain their respective ages of twenty one years, and no longer.

XV. And whereas the fums of twenty fhillings to forty fillings now ufually given with a child placed out by the parishes, are by na means adequate to the procuring such masters and mistresses as are in general fit and proper: and whereas there is a general neglect in the moral and religious inftruction of apprentices; and fome pecuniary en couragement may excite mafters and miftreffes to difcharge their duty, in this refpect, towards young perfons who are thus intrufled in their care; be it therefore further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That from and after the faid firft day of July, one thousand feven hundred and fixty seven, no fuch parish child shall be bound out an apprentice with a fum less than four pounds two fhillings as an apprentice fee; forty fhillings whereof to be paid to the mafter or miftrefs within feven weeks after executing the indentures, and the remaining forty two fhillings to be paid after fuch apprentice fhall have ferved three years of his or her apprenticeship.

XVI. And whereas the act of the fecond of his prefent Majefly, intituled, “An act for the keeping regular, uniform, and an

Penalty on XXIII And be it further enacted by the authority, aforefaid, parish officers, That if any churchwarden, overfeer of the poor, veftryman, and others, clerk of the veftry, mafter of the work-houfe, mafter or warneglecting their duty. den of fuch company of parish clerks, or any clerk of fuch company, or any other perfon or perfons, fhall neglect his duty as directed in and by this act; fuch churchwarden, overfeer of the poor, clerk of the veftry, or master of the work-house, mafter or warden of fuch company of parish clerks, or such clerk of fuch company, perfon or perfons, fhall, for every offence, forfeit and pay to the informer the fum of five pounds; to be recovered before any two or more of his Majefty's justices of the peace, and to be levied by diftrefs and fale of the goods and chattles of the offender, by virtue of a warrant under the hands and feals of the juftices before whom the fame fhall be recovered, directed to any conftable or other peace officer; and f there fhall be any overplus of the faid forfeiture, the fame fhall be returned to the owner, after the charges of such distress and fale fhall be deducted.
