The House then proceeded with the elections of officers.

Nominations for Speaker of the House being in order,

Mr. Heffren placed in nomination the Hon. William D. Bynum, of Marion County.

Mr. Frazer placed in nomination the Hon. Andrew J. Wright, of Grant County.

Those who voted for Mr. Bynum were:

Mr. Bynum having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for and during the present session, whereupon the presiding officer, Secretary of State Hawn, appointed Messrs. Wright and Moody to conduct the Speaker to the Chair.

The Speaker, escorted by this committee, was conducted to the Speaker's stand, where the oath of his office was administered by Judge William E. Niblack.

Mr. Bynum took the Chair and addressed the House as follows:

Gentlemen of the House of Representatives:

I thank you for the honor you have conferred upon me by selecting me to preside over your deliberations. I regret that I do not bring to the position that legislative experience so necessary to a prompt and efficient discharge of the duties. I promise you, however, that I will strive to obtain a perfect
