No. 164. SCHOOL ENROLLMENT, BY SEX AND BY LEVEL: 1950 TO 1990
[In thousands, except percent. As of fall of year. Prior to 1960, excludes Alaska and Hawaii. Civilian noninstitutional
population 5 to 34 years old. Elementary includes kindergarten and grades 1-8; high school, grades 9-12 and
postgraduates; and colleges, 1-4 year colleges and graduate and professional schools. Series shown represent
projections based on different combinations of assumptions about population and enrollment rates. For basis
of population projections, see headnote, table 3. Enrollment Series 1 and 2 are both based on the assumption that
age-specific enrollment rates will continue to increase. Series 1 assumes a relatively rapid increase in the rates
following the experience of 1950-52 to 1969-70; the projected rates are adjusted to tie in with the estimates for
1970. Series 2 assumes a more moderate increase based on an average of the projected rates in Series 1 and rates
in 1970. More detailed methodology is given in source]
