[As of fall. For definition of median, see headnote, table 8. Estimates based on survey of public elementary and secondary schools. Represents results of standard achievement tests of such skills as reading, writing, calculating, and problem solving. Scores on each test were standardized so that the average over the national sample equaled 50 and the standard deviation equaled 10. This means that about 16 percent of all students would score below 40 and about 16 percent above 60]
