The above (except those erased) were received as inhabitants on the conditions specified. "The appearance of the signatures to the original document," says Staples, "indicates that they were not made at the same time. The alteration in the agreement itself, as noted in the margin of it, was undoubtedly made after the establishment of the Commonwealth of England." 1
The following page is a curious and perfect fac-simile of a later list of "names of those who had paid their purchase-money," beginning with William Harris and ending with Joshua Winsor. It is probable that most, if not all, of these names were written by the town clerk, but the page illustrates very closely the writing of a period over two hundred years ago.
