WILLIAM STEERE, son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born February 6, 1765. He married, January 8, 1786, Esther Smith, daughter of Simon Smith. He resided in Glocester, on or near the old Richard Steere place. In the year 1797 the aged patriarch, Richard Steere, then about ninety years of age, executed a deed of gift "for love to his son Stephen Steere, late of Glocester, but now removed away," bestowing upon the latter's son William a tract of one hundred and twenty acres bounded by land of Samuel and Benjamin Phetteplace, Moses Cooper, Jesse Armstrong, etc. William Steere joined Friendship Lodge of Masons in 1805.

IV. WILLIAM, b. December 21, 1792 His father executed a deed of gift of half his farm
to him, October 13, 1827. He joined Friendship Lodge of Masons in 1815, was a
justice of the peace, and died unmarried in 1881, æ. 89.

V. RAY, b. October 4, 1794. His father deeded to him the west part of the old homestead.
He died in Montreal, Canada.

VI. RIZPAH, b. September 7, 1796; m. David Evans of Glocester.

349 VII. CLOVIS, b. July 21, 1798; m., May 4, 1823, Mary Steere, dau. of Wanton Steere. He d. March 11, 1874; she d. June 21, 1867.

HON. RICHARD STEERE, son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born November 24, 1766. He married, November 24, 1791, Lydia Arnold, daughter of William and Jemima (Ballou) Arnold. He resided in Glocester, and perhaps was in Bellingham, Mass., for a time. He died in Smithfield, December 8, 1821, aged 55. His personal estate amounted to $1,186.27.

MARK STEERE, son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born August 11, 1770. He married, October 1, 1795, Betsey Eddy, daughter of Jonathan Eddy. He lived in Norwich, Chenango County, N. Y., in the central part of the village.

ASEL STEERE, Son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born March 5, 1780. He married, October 16, 1814, Sally Kimball. He removed to Providence, where he was a lawyer, and practised there for a number of years. He built the first building that was erected on Canal Street. He is spoken of as very fond of anecdotes, and he loved to hear and narrate a good story. He made his will March 15, 1852. He died in 1871, aged 91, his will being pro

bated May 30, 1871. This instrument made provision for his wife and his nephews Thomas, Asahel, and Smith Steere.

TIMOTHY STEERE, son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born March 22, 1782. He married Cyrene Smith. They lived in South New Berlin, N. Y.

DR. SIMON STEERE, son of Stephen (47), grandson of Richard (19), was born November 12, 1784. He married Belinda Greene, daughter of John Greene. He removed to Ohio about 1821.

379 II. ALPHEUS GREENE, was graduated at West Point; became captain in the Topographical Corps. While engaged in locating Fort Jackson at the mouth of the Mississippi he was drowned.
