JOSEPH STEERE, son of Enoch (32), grandson of Hosea (12), was born August 27, 1766. He married, December 31, 1797, Lillias Wilkinson.

ZEBEDEE STEERE, son of Enoch (32), grandson of Hosea (12), was born January 9, 1771. He married Mary Wood, daughter of Jonah Wood of Vermont. He lived in Glocester, and died December 19, 1852, aged 81. She died October 23, 1851.

4 months.

VI. RACHEL, b. 1804; m. Olive Stone, and lived in Glocester.

VII. ALMON, b. 1806; m., 1st, Lydia Tucker; 2d, December 11, 1848, Lucy Colwell, dau. of John Colwell. He is dead. Almon and Lucy Steere had one daughter, who m. Lawrence, and lives in Glocester.

HOSEA STEERE, son of Noah (33), grandson of Hosea (12), was born July 11, 1784. He married, in 1808, Hannah Tinkham, daughter of Nehemiah Tinkham of Glocester, who was born March 14, 1786, and died March 13, 1869. He died April 14, 1866. He lived in Glocester.

BENEDICT STEERE, son of Noah (33), grandson of Hosea (12). He married, first, Sally Brown; second, October 4, 1849, Charlotte Sheldon, daughter of Angell Sheldon of Johnston. He lived in the eastern part of Glocester, on the old Noah Steere homestead.

ELISHA STEERE, son of John (34), grandson of Hosea (12), was born in Glocester October 11, 1756. He married, first, Mary Thornton; second, Lois Aldrich, in Smithfield, R. I., born May 23, 1768. He was a farmer. He lived

in Rhode Island until 1794 or 1795, when he moved to Southwick, Mass., where he cultivated a large farm. He served his country in the Revolutionary War, His widow, Lois, died in Southwick

and died in Southwick August 24, 1831.

STEPHEN STEERE, son of Elisha (38), grandson of Thomas (18), was born October 29, 1780. He married, January 27, 1805, Sarah Harris, daughter of Robert and Phebe (Jenckes) Harris, who was born December 26, 1782. In a deed, dated September 3, 1819, to Smith Wilbur of North Providence, of a small lot of thatch right in North Providence on the east side of a small creek, he is

described as a "gentleman," and the tract of land is called "the same lot which descended from his Hon'd Grandfather Thomas Steere to his honored father Elisha Steere." Stephen Steere belonged to the Society of Friends. He lived on the east side of Wolf Hill, near Capron's grist-mill. He died April 27, 1853, aged 72 years, 5 months, and 28 days. Mrs. Steere died June 1, 1853, in her 71st year.

ELISHA STEERE, son of Elisha (38), grandson of Thomas (18), was born in Smithfield, near Wolf Hill, May 24, 1783. He married, September 22, 1815, Esther Appleby, daughter of Thomas and Waite (Smith) Appleby of Smithfield, who was born December 28, 1792. He spent his boyhood on the farm. In young manhood he trained with the militia, and rose to the rank of captain. In April, 1817, he bought the Thomas Waterman place, on the southeastern side of the Waterman Reservoir, in Smithfield, going there to reside. Later he purchased the adjoining Andrew Waterman place, and upon the latter estate he ran a saw and grist mill from 1836 to 1844. For a while he dwelt in the "Long House" on the latter property, but returned to the Thomas Waterman homestead, where he resided during the remainder of his life. He sold a portion of his land to the Waterman Reservoir Company, and in 1844 built the cotton mill since known as the "Winsor" or "Vaughan" Mill. The dwellings and also the school-house were erected by Mr. Steere about the time of the erection of the mill. In 1855 this mill was sold to Pooke & Steere by his heirs. He never united with any church, but, springing from a Quaker family, he inclined. in religious views to the sentiments of the Society of Friends, and was accounted

as belonging to that body. He died of brain disorder, after seasons of melancholia in his last days, November 25, 1849, aged 66 years and 6 months. His son, Simon S. Steere, and son-in-law, William Winsor, were appointed administrators. The inventory of his personal estate amounted to $3,159.25, and was presented to the Probate Court December 29, 1849. His widow, with her children, petitioned for the division of her husband's estate February 2, 1851. She died December 7, 1867, aged 74. She made her will February 11, 1865, leaving bequests to her children and grandchildren, who are mentioned by name. Her inventory amounted to $2,865.92.

REV. DAVID STEERE, son of Elisha (38), grandson of Thomas (18), was born August 24, 1791. He married, first, Betsey Latham; second, in Smithfield, October 5, 1820, Mary Latham; third, Mary Hoar. He removed from Smithfield to Massachusetts and became a preacher of the Free Baptist denomination, living for a while in Middleborough, and dying in Rehoboth or Attleborough, Mass. He preached occasionally in Burrillville, R. I. He left no children. His first wife had a child who died young.
