CHAP. 84.

Shares.

First meeting, how called.

SECT. 3. The shares of said company shall be of such number as the directors may determine, the par value of the whole number not to exceed the aggregate sum of two hundred thousand dollars. SECT. 4. Jotham P. Norton is hereby authorized to call the first meeting of the corporators, at York, Maine, by giving to each of the others a written notice of the same seven days before such meeting.

Chapter 84.

An act relating to the schools in the city of Portland.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECT. 1. The school committee of the city of Portland shall consist of the mayor of said city, who shall be ex officio chairman of the committee, and of seven other persons, one of whom shall be elected in each ward at the annual election for municipal officers, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and seventy-five, in the same manner that aldermen now are, and such person shall be a resident of the ward in which he is elected.

SECT. 2. At the first meeting said committee shall designate by lot those of their number who shall hold office for one year, and four of their number who shall hold office for two years, and certify such designation to the clerk of said city, to be by him recorded; and thereafter, at each annual municipal election in said city, a person shall be elected, to fill the place of each one whose term expires, from the same ward as that of the member going out, in the same manner as hereinbefore provided, and hold office for two years. Whenever a vacancy shall occur in said board, the remaining members shall give immediate notice in writing of the fact to said city clerk, and the city council of said city shall thereupon, in joint convention, proceed to fill such vacancy by ballot, and the person residing in the ward in which the vacancy occurred receiving a majority of ballots of persons entitled to vote at such election, shall be declared elected, and hold office till the next annual spring election, when the unexpired term, if any, shall be filled by the election of a person from the ward where the vacancy occurred. SECT. 3. The said committee shall have all the power, and perform all the duties in regard to the care and management of the public schools of said city, which are now conferred and imposed upon superintending school committees by the laws of this state, except as otherwise provided in this act. They shall annually, and whenever there is a vacancy, elect a superintendent of schools for the current municipal year, who shall have the care and supervision of said public schools under their direction, and act as secretary of their board; they shall fix his salary at the time of his election, which shall not be increased during the year for which he is elected, except by consent of said city council, and may at any time dismiss him if they deem it proper and expedient. They shall annually, as soon after the organization of their board as practicable, furnish to said city council an estimate in detail of the several sums required during the ensuing municipal year for the support of said public schools, and shall not increase the salaries of the superintendent and teachers, or any other expenditures, beyond the amounts specified therefor in such estimate, except by consent of said city council. Chapter 85.

An act to amend "an act authorizing George Dyer to establish a ferry."

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

An act to authorize Andrew J. Whiting and Obadiah Allen to extend a wharf into tide waters at Somes' sound, Mount Desert.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECT. 1. Andrew J. Whiting and Obadiah Allen, their heirs and assigns, be authorized and empowered to build and maintain a wharf into the tide waters of Somes' sound, Mount Desert, four hundred feet, but not to interfere with navigation.

SECT. 2. This act shall take effect when approved.

An act to legalize the acts of Joshua A. Lamb as justice of the peace.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECT. 1. The acts of Joshua A. Lamb, of Calais, in the county

to legalize doings of Washington, and State of Maine, as justice of the peace in and for said county, from the fifteenth day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four, to the twentieth day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-five, are hereby ratified and made legal and valid. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECT. 1. The doings of Louis M. Partridge of Stockton, as a justice of the peace and quorum within and for the county of Waldo from May eighth, eighteen hundred seventy-three, to January twenty-sixth, eighteen hundred and seventy-five, are hereby made legal and valid.

An act to incorporate the Calais Red Granite Company.

SECT. 2. Said corporation shall have the right to build such roads on their own land, to tide water, as may be necessary for the purposes of transportation to and from their quarries, and to build and maintain a wharf or wharves on their own land, not to extend more than fifty feet below low water mark.

SECT. 3. The capital stock of said corporation shall not exceed one hundred thousand dollars, and shall be divided into such number of shares and such price per share as the corporation shall by vote determine.

SECT. 4. The first meeting of said corporation for the purpose of organizing the company, may be called by any one of the persons named in this act, by giving written notice to each of the others, setting forth the time, place and purpose of said meeting, five days before said meeting.

SECT. 5. This act shall take effect when approved.

An act to incorporate the Calais Publishing Company.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECT. 1. Charles R. Whidden, Edgar Whidden and Charles R. Whidden, junior, their associates, successors and assigns, are Corporate name. hereby made a corporation under the name of the Calais Publishing

Company, for the purpose of carrying on a general printing and publishing business, including the printing and publishing of newspapers, in Calais, in the county of Washington.

SECT. 2. The capital stock of said corporation shall be five thousand dollars, divided into shares of fifty dollars each, which capital stock may be increased by said corporation to twenty-five thousand dollars. Said corporation may hold real and personal estate suitable for the purposes of this incorporation, to the extent of twenty-five thousand dollars.

SECT. 3. Either of said corporators is authorized to call the first meeting of said corporation.

SECT. 4. This act shall take effect when approved.
