each other, leaving only one-sixth of their number alive; the nations to which they belong shall be convulsed with great commotion, and they too, after being tried, and purified, and made white, shall serve the Lamb. So shall fire come down from heaven, and devour the adversaries at the end of the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to them.

His free

Ver. 10. "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day night for ever and ever." Satan will then be consigned to blackness and darkness for ever and ever. dom shall be taken from him, and eternally confronted with the truth which he wilfully perverted and changed into a lie; for ever in the presence of that Spirit of Holiness whom he blasphemed; and vanquished, subdued by that Son whom he refused to worship, he shall be in a state of torment, which when compared with that glory from which he has fallen, will be like unto the torment of his burning in a lake of fire and brimstone, day and night for ever and ever.

Ver. 11. “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them." The great white throne is a figure of the eternal counsel of God, now to be revealed in the restoration of all things, the time of the accomplishment of His purpose being fully come. The beast and the false prophet being taken and destroyed-the army of Gog and Magog being devoured, and Satan, the great enemy, being consigned to his eternal state, the earth and the heaven, the social and religious fabric which existed during their

wicked reign disappears with them, as no place can now be found for them. All old things are passed away. Lo, all things are become new.

Ver. 12-15. "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God: and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." After the reign of righteousness upon the earth, then shall come the end, when there shall be a resurrection of the just and the unjust; for the sea of wicked spirits in prison gave up its dead; death and hades, which held the bodies of believers, and the souls and bodies of all the others whose names are written in the book of life, these delivered up the dead which were in them. God was then revealed in every conscience; the dead, small and great, stood before Him. The books of Scripture were opened, and another book, the book of life, the secret counsel of God hid in Christ, was also made known. In the wicked, the sentence of condemnation is passed by themselves, for, speechless and silent, they have not one word to say. In all the rest, the blood of sprinkling which speaketh better things than that of Abel, testifies by the power of God's Spirit their acquittal; for "who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea, rather that is risen again, who

is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." All will be judged by the word of truth written in the Scriptures, every man according to his works. They who have sinned wilfully against their conscience without law, shall also perish without law; and as many as have sinned wilfully against their conscience in the law, shall be judged by the law. Death and hades shall then be destroyed. This is the second death of the wicked and of destroyers. Then shall it be felt and said by all the redeemed,-O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? And whosoever would not be saved, but wilfully trampled under foot the offered mercy of God, these alone are not written in the book of life; they have excluded themselves, and they have made their own bed in the lake of fire. Thus it is, that they reap the wages of sin, which is the second death. All the rest, every man without exception, who has not refused mercy, and done despite unto the Spirit of grace, shall receive the gift of God, which is eternal life; and which gift the impenitent have peremptorily and repeatedly refused when offered unto them. How just and equal are the ways of God! In the place of torment an everlasting testimony will be borne to the goodness, forbearance, and long-suffering of Him who sought, and entreated, and beseeched His rebellious creatures to be saved, but they would not. Truly, great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways thou King of saints.

The year from which dates the first measurement of the great events which are to prepare for the restoration of all things is 1772. Then it was that the small cloud of divine truth began to darken the horizon of Satan's spiritual dominion. In that year the Secession Synod

formally declared, in a series of resolutions, something very like the mind of Christ as to the manner in which the gospel should be propagated and the poor supported. In the year 1803, the breach between France and England was renewed, and from thence began a war of twelve years, terminating in 1815; and also from thence is reckoned the 120 years which terminate in the destruction of Satan's power upon the earth. The publication of a sermon in May, 1829, by Dr. A. Marshall of Kirkintilloch, then a minister of the United Secession church, originated that war of opinion which is known by the name of the voluntary church controversy. This was the occasion of accelerating a movement in the church of Scotland, for which God had been preparing her, by raising up many great and godly men in her midst; and in the year 1834, the memorable veto act was passed by the General Assembly, and became the law of the church, and in the end brought about its disruption. From the year 1772 until the year 1834, is 62 years, and the middle watch is the year 1803, being 31 years each way.

In the year 1788, the French revolution commenced, the effects of which will not be fully developed until all things are restored. It was the beginning of those social and political changes of which the one universal kingdom of righteousness and peace will be the end. In the year 1818, the man-child was born who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. From the year 1788 until the year 1818 is 30 years; the middle watch is the year 1803, being 15 years each way. In the year 1787, Louis the Sixteenth of France stood up in his estate as a raiser of taxes, and perished in a few years. In the year 1819, Victoria, the sovereign of the chosen nation, was born,

(so also was the prince consort,) whose reign is to usher in the glory of the latter days, she and her people being the honoured instruments in God's hand of evangelizing the world. From the year 1787 until the year 1819 is 32 years; the middle watch is the year 1803, being 16 years each way.

In the year 1815, in the month of June, between the 15th and 19th days of it, Napoleon and Wellington, with their respective armies, were deciding the destinies of Europe and the world, and the great victory of Waterloo was gained, exactly 600 years from the time that the English barons procured the liberty of Britain, by the king's reluctant grant of Magna Charta. In the year 1827, Gabriel went forth; for in that year the kingdom of Greece was revived, and then commenced the great spiritual conflict, the war of opinion, which shall terminate in the overthrow of all error and falsehood, truth being triumphant. From the year 1803, until the year 1827, is 24 years; the middle watch is the year 1815, being 12 years each way. In the year 1851, Britain shall begin the work of restoration; the wall of the holy city shall begin to be built up. From the year 1803, until the year 1851, is 48 years; the middle watch is the year 1827, being 24 years each way. The Jews, in the days of Nehemiah, were occupied fifty-two days in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem; each day is a year; and from the year 1851, when the work shall have begun, until the year 1903, when Judah and Israel shall become one for ever, is fifty-two years. From the year 1803, until the year 1903, when the Jews shall be restored and united to God's church, is 100 years; the middle watch is the year 1853, being 50 years each way, in which the curse shall take effect upon the Turkish
