mentioned (that is to say) upon trust and confidence that they the said Charles and Alice Gresham and the Survivor of them and the heirs of such Survivor shall out of the Rents Issues and Profitts thereof or by sale thereof or of any part or parcell thereof be enabled to satisfy and pay my funerall debts legacies portions maintenances and annual sums of money by this my last Will given and bequeathed. And the residue thereof they the said Charles and Alice Gresham shall have and retain to the use of themselves their Heirs Executors and Administrators. And I hereby declare that the Annuity or Rent Charge of Twenty Pounds per Annum given by me to the said John Campion and his heirs for the life of my daughter Alice Gresham is in trust for my said daughter and her Assigns only.

Item I doe hereby give and devise unto my son Charles Gresham and his heirs to his and their own use all my Messuages Houses Lands Tenements and Hereditaments with their appurtenances situate lying and being in the City of London and Borrough of Southwarke charged nevertheless with the payment of Ten pounds per Annum to my Son William Gresham and his heirs to be paid half yearly.

And I give to my said son Charles Gresham the adowson free disposition and right of Patronage and presentation to the Rectory and Church of Tatsfield aforesaid to have and to hold the said Land and Tenements unto the said Charles Gresham his heirs and Assigns for ever.

Item I doe hereby appoint my said son Charles Gresham and my daughter Alice Gresham Executors of this my last Will and Testament.

Item I doe hereby Give unto my eldest son Edward Gresham All such Coaches Coach Harnesses Furniture of Coaches and all such Horses as I shall have at the time of my decease. And all my household goods and household stuff of what kind soever not already given by this my Will that shall be at the time of my decease within my nowe dwelling house in Titsey aforesaid. And I doe hereby likewise farther devise the sum of four hundred pounds to my said son Charles Gresham and Daughter Alice Gresham to be paid out of my personal estate and the moneys arising by sale of the Lands after all my debts and funeral expenses are satisfied, if so much shall then remain to pay it, upon Trust that they shall pay the said four hundred pounds to such person and for such purposes as my said son Edward Gresham shall direct, and until the same shall be raised I appoint that my said Executors shall pay the sum of forty pounds yearly to such person and for such purposes as my son Edward Gresham shall appoint. Item I doe hereby give and devise unto my said Executors all the residue of my Lands Tenements and all my personal estate after my debts and legacies be satisfied to be equally divided between my said Executors.

Item I give to Mrs. Elizabeth Gresham daughter of Mrs. Martha Gresham twenty pounds to be paid to her own hands within six months after my decease. To my Cousin Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips twenty pounds. To my servant Elizabeth Knight one hundred pounds. To Jane Wood daughter of Thomas Wood Butcher lately deceased twenty pounds. To my servant Thomas Miles twenty shillings. To my servant Edward Leslie twenty pounds. To all the rest of my servants which shall live with me at the time of my decease twenty shillings apeice. To my late servant William Pattingdon ten pounds.

And whereas I stand seized to me and my heirs of the Reversion and Remainder of the Mannor of Westerham, the Mannor and Advowson of Titsey, the Mannor Parke and Advowson of Limpsfield and of diverse other Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments mentioned and contained in one deed indented quinquepartite dated on or about the 20th day of January in the three and twentieth year of his late Majesty King Charles the Second made between me the said Sir Marmaduke Gresham and Dame Alice my wife since deceased of the 1st part Edward Thurland of Reigate Esq' since deceased John Dawling of Lambeth Esqre of the 2nd part, Sir John Maynard of the Parish of St Giles in the Fields Kt. then one of his Majesties Serjeants at Law and since deceased of the third part, Edward Gresham Esqre my son and Heir apparent and Martha now his wife by the name of Martha Maynard youngest daughter of the said Sir John Maynard of the 4th part, and Joseph Maynard of the said Parish of St Giles in the fields Esq' since deceased and

Duncumbe Colchester of Westbury Co. Gloucester Esqre of the 5th part, expectant and depending upon the severall and respective estates in the said deed limitted and declared. Now I the said Sir Marmaduke Gresham for the further conveying and settling the said reversions and remainders of the severall estates in the said deed limitted doe hereby give and devise the said reversions and remainders unto my sonin-law George Thorpe Doctor in Divinity, and Andrew Phillips of the Inner Temple London Esq. their heirs and assigns for and during the life of my said son Edward Gresham upon trust to support the contingent remainders hereafter limitted from being destroyed and to make entry as often as need shall require but to permitt the said Edward Gresham and his assigns to take the Rents Issues and Profits thereof during his life. And after the deecase of the said Edward Gresham I give the same to the first son of the body of the said Edward Gresham lawfully begotten and to the heirs males of the Body of such first son. And for default of such issue to the second third fourth and every other son of the said Edward Gresham and of their severall and respective heirs males of their Bodies lawfully begotten. And for default of such issue remainder to my son Charles Gresham during the terme of his natural life with like remainder to the heirs males of his body successively in tail male. And for default of such issue to my son William during the terme of his natural life with like remainder to the heirs males of his body lawfully begotten and their heirs successively in tail male. And for default of such issue then to remain to my own right heirs for ever.

Provided always and my mind and intent is that whereas in and by two severall Indentures both bearing date the first day of June in the two and thirtieth year of his late Majesty's Reign King Charles the Second and in the year of our Lord 1680, the one made between me of the one part and William Worth Citizen and Merchant Taylor of London and Elizabeth his wife of the other part and the other made between me of the one part and John Steer of Westerham Co. Kent yeoman of the other part I have severally covenanted for me my Heirs Executors and Administrators with them the said William Worth and John Steer their severall Heirs and Assigns that each of them should quietly and peaceably hold and enjoy the Lands and Tenements by the said Indentures to them severally conveyed against all persons claiming under me (except as in the said Covenants is excepted). Now if either of my younger sons Charles or William refuse to release all Right Title or Interest in the said lands severally to the said William Worth and John Steer upon reasonable notice and request on that behalfe made, then the legacy and devise hereby made and all benefit and advantage of this my Will to such son or sons soe refusing shall cease and determine provided always that such Tender be made within seven years after my decease.

Provided also and my mind and intent is and I doe hereby will and devise that notwithstanding any use or estate herein before limitted, it shall be lawful and I doe hereby give full power and authority to my son Edward Gresham at any time during his natural life, and after the decease and failure of issue male of the said Edward Gresham for every other my said sons respectively during such time as they shall stand and be seized of and in an estate of freehold in the Mannor of Westerham by this my Will to them limitted and devised from time to time as they may happen to marry, as occasion may require to settle a Jointure by deed in writing indented to be by them sealed and subscribed in the presence of two or more credible witnesses, at their will and pleasure to grant or appoint the said Mannor of Westerham with the appurtenances or any part thereof or to charge the same with any annuity or yearly rent charge not exceeding three hundred pounds per annum to and for any or every such woman or women wife or wives as they shall hereafter happen to marry. In trust for her to continue during the life of such respective Wife for her jointure and in lieu and full barr of her dower.

Item I doe hereby give unto my said Son Charles Gresham all my Library of Books. Item I give unto the poor of the said Parish of Titsey forty pounds, and the like sum of forty pounds to the poor of the said Parish of Limpsfield to be divided among them by the advice and approbacion of the Minister of the said respective Parishes. In witness whereof I the said Sir Marmaduke Gresham have

unto this my last Will and Testament sett my hand and seal the 14th of January in the seventh year of the Reign of our Soveraign Lord William the Third and in the year of our Lord 1695.

ADMINISTRATION OF SIR EDWARD GRESHAM Bt, 1709.

WILL OF SIR CHARLES GRESHAM BART., 1715.

In the name of God. Amen. The 24th day of June 1715. I Sir Charles Gresham of Titsey Co. Surrey Baronet being of indifferent good health of body and of sound and perfect mind and memory praised be God therefore, but considering the certainty of my death and the uncertainty of the time thereof do therefore make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.

Inprimis I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors and as touching my Temporal Estate I dispose thereof as followeth. Item I give to the poor people of the Parish of Titsey the sum of five pounds and to the poor people of the Parish of Limpsfield the like sum of five pounds to be distributed at the discretion of my Executors within three months next after my decease.

Item I give unto Dame Mary my loving wife my best tea table and silver teapot and all furniture thereto belonging to be delivered to her immediately after my decease. Item I do hereby give and devise unto her during the term of her natural life all that my Farm called Tyle House Farm in Limpsfield now in lease to Christopher Lovell and of the yearly rent of fifty seven pounds, and also one moiety of Hall Farm in Oxted which said moiety is now in lease to Richard Jewell at the yearly rent of five and thirty pounds, and I do hereby ratify and confirm the settlements on her by me already made of the said farm and lands for the said term of her life.

Item I give to my brother William Gresham and sister Alicia Gresham the sum of ten pounds apiece to be paid within twelve months after my decease. Item I give unto Mrs. Ann Godfrey the sum of ten pounds to be paid within twelve months after my decease. Item I give unto my eldest son Marmaduke Gresham the ring which was my fathers commonly called the family Ring. And I also give unto him my two best saddle horses which he shall choose to be delivered to him immediately after my decease.

Item I give unto my eldest daughter Mary Gresham my silver tankard of about the quantity of three pints, and I also give and devise unto her and to her heirs and assigns for ever all that my parcel of meadow land commonly called Peacocks Mead with all and singular the appurtenances lying in Titsey.

Item I give to my servant Charles Comfort five pounds, and to Edward Farrant of Tattesfield twenty shillings. To my footboy Peter Nicholls the sum of five pounds for and towards the putting him apprentice and not otherwise.

Item I do hereby give and devise unto my said eldest son Marmaduke Gresham and to his heirs and assigns for ever all that the advowson, donation free disposition and right of patronage of and in the Rectory and Parish Church of Tattesfield Co. Surrey in lieu and recompense of the sum of one hundred and fifty guineas which I received of William Saxby of Lingfield gentleman as a consideration for securing him the said William Saxby and his heirs in the possession of certain lands called Willmotts in Lingfield aforesaid. And I do hereby desire my said son Marmaduke to release and convey unto the said William Saxby his heirs and assigns all his right and title to the said lands called Willmotts upon request to him made by the said William Saxby his heirs or assigns. And if the said Marmaduke my son shall refuse or neglect to release the said lands to the said William Saxby or if he shall disturb the said William Saxby his heirs or assigns in the possession of the said lands that then the legacies and devise hereby made and given and all benefit and advantage of this my Will to my said son Marmaduke shall cease and be utterly void and then I do hereby give and devise the said advowson and all other things to him devised unto and amongst the rest of my said children in such manner as my other real and personal estate is hereinafter devised and given.

Item all the rest residue and remainder of my messuages lands tenements hereditaments goods chattels money debts and estate whatsoever as well real as

personal as well in possession as reversion (not before herein otherwise disposed of) together with the sum of two thousand pounds which by an Act of Parliament made in the 12th year of the reign of our late Sovereign Lady Queen Anne of happy memory intituled an Act to enable me to raise the sum of five thousand pounds and interest and maintenance for Elizabeth the daughter of my brother Sir Edward Gresham Baronet deceased and to make provision for my younger children I am empowered to charge on the Manor of Westerham and on certain lands in Westerham and Limpsfield for the portion and portions of all and every my younger children I give and devise unto my seven younger children Edward, Charles, Mary, Alicia, Martha, Anne, and Beatrice or to such of them as shall be living at the time of my decease and to their heirs and assigns for ever equally to be divided between them share and share alike after my debts legacies and funeral expenses shall be thereout first fully satisfied and paid, and if any of my said seven younger children shall happen to die before they attain the age of twenty one years leaving no issue then the part and share of him her or them so dying shall be divided amongst the survivors of them in equal proportions share and share alike.

Item I do hereby make and ordain Thomas Reader Clerk Rector of Tattesfield and John Foster Clerk Executors in trust of this my last Will during the respective minorities of my said children and do hereby empower them to receive and take the rents profits interest and proceed of all my Estate and also the interest of the said Two thousand pounds until my said seven younger children shall attain their respective ages of one and twenty and with the same to bring up maintain and educate them until they attain the said age and then to give a true and just account to each of them respectively of and concerning his or her respective share. And I give to my said Executors in trust two guineas a peice besides their necessary expenses. And lastly I do hereby appoint my said loving wife and Mrs Anne Godfrey to be guardians of my said seven younger children and to have the education tuition and bringing up of them until they attain their said respective ages of one and twenty years for which said education and maintenance I order my said Executors in trust to pay unto them all the said rents profits and interest of my Estate and also the interest of the said Two thousand pounds. In witness whereof I the said Sir Charles Gresham (revoking all former Wills by me heretofore made) have to each sheet of this my last Will containing two sheets of paper set my hand and seal the day and year first above written. Signed sealed published and declared by the said Testator Sir Charles Gresham to be his last Will in the presence of William Andrews, Sarah Allingham, J. Farmer Jun'.

Memorandum that I Sir Charles Gresham of Titsey Baronet being of sound mind and perfect memory praised be God for the same do make this Codicil annexed to my last Will and Testament in manner following.

First my intent is that as my servant Charles Comfort is long gone from me he shall have but one shilling in lieu of the five pounds given him in my Will.

Item

I do also give to my brother William twenty pounds and to Mary his wife the sum of ten pounds to be paid unto them over and above the ten pounds given to my said brother William in my Will. Item I give to my son Marmaduke over and above what I have given him in my Will my gold watch to be delivered to him immediately after my decease. Item I give to my servant William Andrewes twenty pounds. In witness whereof I have to this Codicil set my hand and seal the 17th of March 1717.

Proved in London with the Codicil on the 2nd May 1718 by Thomas Reader and John Foster Clerks Executors.
