GRANT OF AUGMENTATION, BY BARKER, GARTER, TO RICHARD GRESHAM, 1537.

To all present and and to come which thies presents letters shall see here or Rede, I Christofore Barker esquier alias gartier Pryncipall Kyng of armes of Englishmen Sendith due humble recomendacion and gretyng as it apperteyneth. Equite Willyth and reason ordenyth that the men vertuouse and of Comendable disposicion and lyuyng be by their merytes good name and fame, renoumed and rewarded in their parsonnes in this mortall lyffe so bryeue and transitory but also after them all those that of their bodies shall issue and procreate to be in all placys of honour perpetually with other Renommed and rewarded by certeyn ensignes and demonstracions of honnour and noblenes. That is to Witt of armes helme and crest with their appurtenauncs to the entente that by their example other shall the more enforce themselff's perseuerantly to vse their lyffs in honorable Works and vertuouse deeds to purchace and opteyne the fame of auncyent noblesse in theire lygne and posterite. And therfore I the seid gartier principall kyng of armes of Englishmen Which not allonly by the comon renome or fame but also by the Reporte and Witnes of sundry gentill and noble men am credably infourmed That Richard Gresseham gentilmann mayer and alderman of the honorable Citie of london is come and discendyd honest line and auncyent Stocke and he and his auncetors hath long contynowed in nobilite and beryng armes that is to say. demonstracion of armes helme and crest to be augmented and annexed to the same, the blason wherof aperith in maner and fourme folowyng That is to say Siluer a chiueron Ermile iij moletts of v poynts sable percyd of the felde a chief gueules on the chief a pellycane close betwene ij legges of a lyon rasyd gold armed asure, vpon his crest a grassehopper cochant gold, within a tofte of grasse verte sett in a wreth gold and gueules the mantelettes gueules doubled argent botoned and tasceled gold, as more playnly aperith depict in this margent. To haue and to holde to the said Richard Gresseham and his posterite with their due differences to vse and enjoy to their honnour for euermore, In witnes wherof I the said gartier princypall King of Armes hath sett therto the seale of myne office of gartier principall kyng of armes of Englisshmen and also the Seale of myne armes, Youen at London the last day of Nouember in the yere of oure lorde Jesu chryst a thowsand fyue hundreth thirtie and seven and of the Reigne of oure soueraigne lorde kyng henry the viijth by the grace of god kyng of England and of ffraunce defensor of the feith lorde of Irlande and in erthe the sup'me hedde of the church of Englande

Esquire second sonne to James Gresham maryed Jone doughter to Geffrey Porter of Holkham in the said Countie and by her had yssue James Gresham eldest Sonne, Margerye maryed to John Dune of Bale in the Countie of Norff., Vrsula maryed to ffrauncis Gerbridge of Walsingham parva, Suzan maryed to Will'm Candelar of Walsingham Parva.

James Gresham of Walsingham Parva in the aforesaide Countie Esquire, eldest sonne & heire to Will'm Gresham maryed Agnes doughter to Nycholas Wynne of ffransham in Com. Norff. Esquire and by her had yssue Pawle Gresham his eldest

sonne.

Pawle Gresham of Walsingham aforesaide Esquire, eldest Sonne and heire to James Gresham maryed to his first Wyfe Elizabeth doughter to Jerome Markham of Haughton in Com. Notingham Esquire & by her had yssue Thomas Gresham eldest Sonne, Rychard second Sonne & Anne Gresham.

After the said Pawle maryed to his second Wyfe Margarett doughter to Randolfe... & of Elizabeth his Wyfe doughter and one of t'heyres of Will'm Dale of Tedelmarche in Com. Berkshire Esquire and by her hath yssue Nycholas Gresham.

Sir Thomas Gresham, Knight, Agent of the base contry of Flanders for the Quenes Maiestie and Fownder of the Royall Exchange at the Citie of London maried Anne the doughter of William ferneley of West Creting co. Suff. and had ysue Richard Gresham his only Son died yonge.
